About the Role - Director of People and Culture
As a key partner to the owner/CEO, this position is responsible for leading all HR service
areas and managing related daily operations, which includes aligning HR service strategies
for employee services, talent management, organizational effectiveness, and employee
relations. This is currently and individual contributor role with future direct reports
contingent based on growth strategy.
The ideal candidate will….
balance strategic and tactical approaches, providing leadership, mentorship and
expert direction managing the development, implementation and ongoing
administration of programs, services, policies, systems, and processes.
- measure and report on results and make the business case for change – serving as
an internal resource to peer business leaders and, more broadly, to the workforce.
- understand and practise sound change leadership, taking an inclusive and
transparent approach to implementation initiatives, and influencing critical buy-in at
all levels.
- provide performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching,
counseling, career development, disciplinary actions) to inspire elevated
performance.
- support day-to-day employee relations by working with management and
employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity
and retention.
- lean heavily into organizational development, providing and actioning
recommendations that support retail operations.
- actively and continuously be involved in all areas of HR, growing the team, ensuring
legal compliance, payroll & benefits, workplace health and safety, technological
capability, recruitment, training, and more.
- masterfully establish, communicate, and implement strategies for growth and to
enhance the employee experience.
- think like an entrepreneur and always be looking to optimize or create efficiencies,
using data and technology as a tool to help look for patterns to better predict and
model scenarios, and to tell stories, and by using peer networks to bring back best
practices.
Skills & Experience
Must Haves…
- Diploma or degree or equivalent business experience, preferably focused in Human
Resources or related field
- CPHR or similar designation required
- Minimum of 10 years of Human Resources generalist experience in a serviceoriented
field such as grocery, hospitality, or retail
- Minimum of 3 years of senior leadership experience
- Experience advising and collaborating at the executive level, with demonstrated
success building trust and credibility for the HR function
- Experience founding the HR discipline and implementing fundamental HR policies,
procedures, and practises successfully in a long-standing, yet growing business
- Excels at building positive relationships and cohesive communities at all levels of the
organization
- Technically savvy, competent with Microsoft products, and various ATS, LMS, HRIS
technologies
Strong assets…
- Experience leading in a regional capacity including acquiring and overseeing multiple
units or locations.
- Experience sourcing and/or implementing new technologies and systems to support
HR strategies.
Location & Travel
- This position may be remote (home-based) depending on the location of the
successful candidate, with travel to the current locations in Gibsons, Salmo, and Agassiz, BC.
- Frequency of visitation to store locations will happen approximately five times a
month (in total) with flexibility based on schedule and need.
- Candidate will be located in Greater Vancouver, Sea to Sky region, or Sunshine Coast,
and will have access to a suitable work space.
- Travel expenses, including mileage and ferries, will be reimbursed.
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle is required.
