The Canadian College of English Language (CCEL) is currently expanding our active private instructor roster in order to meet growing demand for one-on-one, personalized ESL training. We are seeking experienced ESL Instructors to join our hiring pool for upcoming in-person private tutoring contracts.
As a member of our roster, you will be the first to receive opportunities for private tutoring contracts as they become available, and you will be free to accept or decline contracts as you wish based on your expertise and availability. This role is ideal for freelance instructors or instructors who are looking to supplement their teaching schedules with flexible, one-on-one placements.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, student-centred ESL instruction to private learners.
- Plan ESL lessons based on the specific learning goals, interests, and needs of the learner (e.g. general English instruction, Business English, exam preparation, academic research projects).
- Monitor learner progress and provide timely, action-oriented feedback throughout the contract.
- Track and report instruction hours for administrative purposes.
- Communicate concerns or issues to the academic director proactively.
Qualifications & Skills
- Native or proficient English speaker
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (any discipline; English, Linguistics, Humanities, Education preferred)
- Certification: TESL Canada recognized teacher training certificate, CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, or equivalent (including MA TESOL)
- Experience: 1+ years of ESL teaching experience in Canada or abroad, some experience with one-on-one instruction preferred
- Specialization: Experience in specific areas of ESL instruction (Business English, IELTS/TOEFL/CELPIP Preparation, EAP) is an asset.
- Soft Skills: Strong reliability, punctuality, flexibility, and patience are non-negotiable.
Work Schedule & Contract Details
- This is a contract-based position. Private tutoring contracts vary in length, hours per week, and session frequency based on student requests and requirements.
- Availability: Most contracts request lessons in the afternoons or early evenings (typically sometime between 2 PM and 6 PM). Instructors maintain control of their own schedules. You choose to accept or decline contract offers as they come up.
- Location: Private lessons will be delivered in-person at our downtown Vancouver campus. Instructors must be based in Vancouver or the surrounding areas and be able to travel to campus as needed.
