Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dedicated and results driven professional to join our team in the role of Site Environmental Advisor in Timmins , Ontario. While the position is based in Timmins, the role is focused on supporting multiple Hydroelectric Generating stations across Northeastern Ontario. Working in a centre-led Environment Health and Safety Organization and reporting to the Senior Manager, Environment Operations Support the role of Site Environmental Advisor offers a unique opportunity to work in an industrial setting and provide strategic environmental support to our operations.

This role is responsible for the planning and implementation of various requirements under OPG’s environmental management system and compliance programs, and for delivering technical and consultative services on any environment related matters. The Site Environmental Advisor plays an essential role in supporting OPG’s Renewable Generation Business Unit for Northeastern Operations, and is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to join a dynamic team of individuals.

Act as an Environmental Authority in the Environment, Health and Safety Organization primarily supporting Northeastern Operations of OPG ;
This position requires periodic overnight travel to multiple OPG locations / facilities;
Advise and report on proper management and compliance requirements for air emissions, effluents, waste management and other environmental aspects related to hydroelectric generating facilities;
As a recognized expert, provide analysis and assessment, and develop solutions to problems relating to environmental issues;
Develop proposals for and make recommendations to support environmental decisions;
Implement and monitor the effectiveness of programs, and procedures that support effective environmental management under OPG’s ISO 14001 registered EMS;
As required, lead or assist with the environmental assessment process for project developments, including assisting or leading consultation activities with government agencies, Indigenous groups and the public, and the negotiation and resolution of complex environmental issues;
Conduct work in accordance with applicable legal requirements, corporate policies related to environmental management and approved procedures and work practices;
Complete application documentation for and provide ongoing liaison and negotiations (to influence conditions) with regulatory agencies (including the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and parks “MECP, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry “MNRF”, Department Fisheries And Oceans “DFO”) to obtain permits and approvals, authorizations, and licenses;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with environmental stakeholders at facilities, within OPG and with environmental regulatory agencies;
Produce environmental reports, procedures and programming documents;
Review specific project inputs for quality and accuracy;
Interface with other Environmental Site Advisors and specialist staff to provide effective support to RG Operations
Prepare, analyze, and interpret environmental compliance reports for regulatory agencies, and internal performance reports for Environment Health and Safety Organisation and Renewable Generation stakeholders; establish, maintain, and utilize environmental data and reporting systems;
Coordinate activities in support of environmental audits and assessments;
Monitor Renewable Generation’s environmental performance using performance and compliance data and metrics;
Report and advise on environmental problems and issues;
Keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of specialty and environmental legislation;
Recommend that studies or research and development programs are undertaken as deemed necessary to improve performance, operation, maintenance, environmental performance and approvals, design or construction of operating plants. Take a lead role in the direction, coordination and implementation of approved programs.

University Degree in Engineering, Science, Environmental/Natural Sciences, and/or relevant studies;
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng), Professional Geologist (P.Geo), Registered Professional Biologist (R.P Bio), or similar designations are an asset.

We are seeking a dynamic, dedicated and results driven environmental professional who has the following:

Minimum 4 to 8 years of progressive experience in a related role with increasing levels of responsibility for environmental matters;
Experience in federal and/or provincial emissions reporting;
Experience with obtaining and amending Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs) is an asset;
Experience with obtaining permits from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is an asset.
Experience liaising/negotiating with environmental regulatory bodies/agencies is an asset;
Must have strong knowledge of environmental regulations (federal and provincial), their interpretation and applicability;
Demonstrated knowledge of Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001);
Previous experience in a similar type of consultative role that provided effective and sound advice, guidance, and analysis to department/line mangers, stakeholders and decision makers;
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels;
Superior writing skills including the ability to compile information from research, analytics, governance or verbal direction in order to draft documentation and reports;
Strong analytical, research and problem solving skills, with a keen eye for detail;
A results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
Strong interpersonal skills, experience in maintaining productive relationships;
Sound professional judgment, Commitment to high standards of regulatory compliance;
A strong drive and a high level of energy, commitment and enthusiasm to take on complex and challenging situations in a dynamic organization;
High proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook), including advanced knowledge and experience working with MS Excel required. Comfortable with functions of Pivot Tables, data lookups, Macros, would be considered an asset;
Experience and exposure from working in/for a highly regulated industrial industry such as: utilities, energy, power, mining, forestry or public sector regulatory body is preferred;
Willing to travel up to 30 % of the time; and
Valid driver’s licence.
