Our practice focuses on bail advocacy, early resolution strategies, and strong trial defence.
The Role
As an Associate Lawyer, you will:
- Represent clients in bail hearings, Crown Pre-Trials (CPTs), Judicial Pre-Trials (JPTs), and trials.
- Conduct trials and contested hearings before the Ontario Court of Justice (OCJ) and the Superior Court of Justice (SCJ).
- Conduct legal research, draft motions, facta, and prepare court materials.
- Manage files with professionalism and empathy, working with minimal supervision and independence.
- Build strong, ongoing client relationships, ensuring they feel supported and advocated for throughout the process.
- Collaborate with staff, community organizations, and treatment providers to achieve the best outcomes.
- Cover both Hamilton and Niagara jurisdictions interchangeably as required.
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of post-call experience (criminal law experience preferred; motivated new calls considered).
- Must be a member or eligible to become a member of the Legal Aid Roster.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
- Ability to conduct CPTs independently is required.
- Familiarity with Legal Aid Ontario processes is required.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent client-handling skills with the ability to build trust and advocate effectively.
- Flexibility to appear in Niagara courts.
- Ability to speak a second language (Spanish and/or French) is a strong asset, given our diverse client base.

- We offer a competitive compensation structure consisting of a base salary of $100,000, plus performance-based compensation tied directly to billable work. Salary is negotiable and will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability.
