About Prairie Gateway Rail
At Prairie Gateway Rail, we are "Prairie Built. Rail Ready." We provide specialized rail infrastructure solutions, including TIGS Certified Track Inspection, Maintenance of Way (MOW), industrial switching, and strategic rail advisory services. We serve industrial parks, logistics centres, grain elevators, and short-line railroads across Manitoba, ensuring private rail assets keep supply chains moving reliably.
Position Overview
We are seeking a safety-first Track Supervisor / Field Superintendent to lead our mobile field operations and manage contract track inspections. This hybrid role serves as our direct, on-site technical authority. You will split your time between executing professional track inspections using hi-rail vehicles and leading the field crews deployed to repair the defects you identify.
Key Responsibilities
- Hi-Rail, Track Inspection & Compliance
- Execute Hi-Rail Patrols: Safely operate and dismount hi-rail equipped inspection vehicles to conduct comprehensive track and geometry patrols across client subdivisions and industrial spurs.
- Track Protection & Authority: Set up proper track protection, line switches, and communicate directly with Class I railway dispatchers (CN/CPKC) to obtain track occupancy permits (TOP) for safe hi-rail movement.
- Perform Certified Inspections: Complete rigorous track, switch, and geometry inspections following TIGS standards and Transport Canada Track Safety Rules.
- Detailed Reporting: Locate structural deficiencies (broken rails, worn ties, drainage faults) and submit precise inspection and material inventory logs to establish clear maintenance priorities.
Crew Leadership & Project Delivery
- Supervise Field Operations: Direct daily operations for Maintenance of Way crews, track maintainers, and heavy machine operators.
- Execute Maintenance & Repairs: Oversee and assist with hands-on track rehabilitation work, including tie and rail replacement, ballasting, tamping, and crossing rehabilitation.
- Coordinate Workflows: Organize crew schedules, mobilize machinery, and manage logistics across various industrial development sites, agricultural processors, and manufacturing yards.
Client & Safety Management
- Act as Employee-in-Charge (EIC): Enforce strict on-track safety and regulatory protocols, making zero compromises on the safety of your crew or the customer's property.
- Partner with Clients: Communicate inspection findings directly to customer project teams, explaining operational risks and proposing practical maintenance solutions.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in railway track construction or maintenance.
- Leadership: Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role (such as Track Foreman or Lead Inspector) directing a multi-person field workforce.
- Rule Book Certifications: Current qualification in the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)—specifically with an active qualification for tracking authority and occupying main lines. Valid qualification in Transport Canada Track Safety Rules is mandatory. TIGS certification is a significant asset.
- Hi-Rail Qualification: Documented experience operating hi-rail vehicles, including knowledge of mechanisms, maintenance checks, alignment, and shunting hazards.
- Safety Access: Must possess or be able to quickly obtain clean e-RAILSAFE clearance and pass required safety screening.
- Mobility: Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract. Ability to travel to project locations across Southern Manitoba as required.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to walk miles of track over rough ballast terrain in variable Manitoba weather conditions.
Benefits & Culture
- Competitive base salary based on trade experience and qualifications.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefit plan.
- Company service vehicle or vehicle allowance provided for regional project travel.
- Professional development and support for continuous rail certifications.
- Opportunity to grow alongside an expanding, independent prairie rail contractor.
