Unit 101, located‑ on the 10th floor of the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC), is a 20-bed‑ acute pre‑ and post‑operative spine unit specializing in the management of complex spinal surgeries, acute spinal cord injuries, and neurological conditions. As one of the only dedicated spine units in Alberta Health Services, the environment is fast ‑paced, physically demanding, and deeply rewarding. The Spine LPN works to full scope, providing specialized nursing care to support the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health while preventing illness, injury, and disability. LPNs work closely with Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Clinicians, Registered Nurses, and Health Care Aides, and collaborate with multidisciplinary partners including physicians, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Transition Services, and Social Work. Successful practice on Unit 101 requires strong teamwork, excellent communication, and a commitment to safe, evidence ‑informed patient care. The FMC campus also supports staff wellness with access to multiple amenities including a staff fitness centre, landscaped walking paths, a new staff wellness patio, and a variety of shops such as Starbucks, Good Earth, and Tim Hortons. The unit is also minutes from the University District, offering additional dining and retail options. Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Active registration in good standing, with the CLHA (College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta) Graduation from a recognized Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Current BCLS‑HCP certification. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Ability to repeatedly push, pull, and lift objects over 50 lbs. Ability to meet heavy physical demands as per the AHS Job Demands Summary, including assisting with ambulation, lifting, and transfers.
Preferred Qualifications:
One to two years of experience in an acute post‑operative or surgical setting. Previous spine nursing experience or experience caring for neurosurgical patients. Prior experience working on Unit 101. Experience orienting new staff or preceptoring students. Physically able to perform all required tasks, including safe patient handling, lifting, and transferring. Experience with Connect Care (EPIC).
