Overview
Before & After School Program Educator
Mount Uniacke Early Learning & Child Care Inc.
Location: Uniacke District School – Mount Uniacke, NS
Position: Part-Time / Casual
Pay: $18–$21 per hour, based on experience
Start Date: Late August / September 2026
Love working with kids? Come play, create & make a difference!
Are you the kind of person who will jump into a game of tag, help build the world's greatest LEGO creation, lead a craft, head outside for an adventure, or turn an ordinary afternoon into something kids look forward to?
We want you on our team!
Mount Uniacke Early Learning & Child Care Inc. is looking for fun, reliable, energetic and caring Program Educators to join our Before & After School Program at Uniacke District School.
Our BAP program serves children from Pre-Primary to Grade 6 and is built around what childhood should include — play, movement, outdoor time, creativity, friendships, independence and FUN.
This is an active, hands-on position. Our educators don't simply supervise from the sidelines — they play, lead, create, encourage and engage alongside the children.
If you enjoy working with kids and aren't afraid of a little noise, grass stains, messy crafts or a very competitive game of Gaga Ball, you might fit right in!
Available Shifts
We are currently hiring for a variety of schedules:
- Morning BAP: 6:45 AM–8:00 AM
- After School: 2:00 PM–6:00 PM
- Shorter afternoon shifts: approximately 2:00 PM–5:00 PM
- Casual/on-call positions
- Monday–Friday
Some flexibility is available depending on your schedule.
These shifts can be a great fit for:
- University or college students looking for work around classes
- Education, ECE, Child & Youth Care, Recreation, Psychology or Social Work students
- School staff looking to pick up additional hours
- Coaches, camp counsellors or recreation leaders
- Parents with school-day availability
- Anyone with experience working with children who is looking for meaningful part-time work
Morning shifts are especially great for students who want to make some extra money before heading to class!
What You'll Be Doing
No two days at BAP look exactly the same! You may be:
- Supervising children in indoor and outdoor environments
- Leading games, sports, crafts and recreational activities
- Getting outside and actively participating in outdoor play
- Helping children develop friendships, independence and social skills
- Encouraging children to try new activities and become involved
- Supporting children during transitions and daily routines
- Providing positive behaviour guidance and setting clear, appropriate boundaries
- Helping children work through conflicts and challenging moments
- Supporting children with different abilities, personalities and individual needs
- Preparing and organizing activities and program materials
- Completing attendance records and required program documentation
- Reporting incidents and accidents according to program procedures
- Communicating professionally with families, school staff and fellow team members
- Helping with program set-up and general clean-up
- Participating in staff meetings, training and professional development
Most importantly, you'll help create a place where children feel safe, welcomed, included and excited to come each day.
Who We're Looking For
Our strongest educators are people who:
- Take initiative and notice what needs to be done
- Are genuinely interested in engaging and playing with children
- Are comfortable leading a group or starting an activity
- Can be silly and fun while still maintaining appropriate boundaries
- Are patient, dependable and responsible
- Communicate well with both children and adults
- Can remain calm and use good judgment during busy or challenging situations
- Work well as part of a team
- Are comfortable redirecting behaviour when necessary
- Understand that active supervision means being present, engaged and aware
- Are flexible and able to adapt when plans change
- Enjoy being outdoors in a variety of weather
- Bring a positive attitude to work
We aren't looking for someone who knows everything on day one. We are looking for people who are willing to learn, jump in and be part of the team.
