Job Summary
Reporting to the Residence Life Manager (Operations), the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) is a live-in position that coordinates student life in residence in accordance with the mission and policies of Residences and Queen's University. The RLC is responsible for establishing a vibrant residence community that provides feedback, mentoring, support, and compassionate challenge to residents through various interactions such as student conduct and behaviour management, educational programming, team development and student staff supervision, and crisis response. The RLC encourages a sense of belonging, resilience, and academic success in residence students in collaboration with others in the Residences portfolio.

The schedule for this position requires the incumbent to work frequent evenings and weekends and requires living in residence.
Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinate, oversee, support and promote Residence Life. Ensure the effective and co-operative functioning of student staff (e.g. Residence Dons, Residence Facilitators and House Councils) as collaborative teams. This includes, but is not limited to, the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of Residence Dons, and selection, training, and evaluation with the Residence Society, and other student leadership positions.
  • Establish strong working relationships with the Residence Society; support student government by attending House Council meetings and advising the House Council(s) in all areas, particularly with regard to student conduct, residence policies, and planning.
  • Administrative support and duties, such as documenting incidents, assisting with room assignments and changes; maintain regular office hours; attend regular staff meetings; chair regular Don and house team meetings.
  • Participate in the residence-wide, on-call system; provide and/or facilitate crisis and disaster response often in conjunction with other University and Residence senior staff.
  • Address student behaviour using the non-academic student conduct system or other appropriate means under the guidance of the Manager (Conduct), Residence Life.
  • Support students dealing with personal issues directly or indirectly through student staff and refer to appropriate resources as required. Become acquainted with residents, where possible. Plan and implement individualized Orientation events and welcoming for specific residences as needed.
  • Provide work direction, and technical/functional guidance to the Assistant Residence Life Coordinator(s). Schedule and assign work, and oversee its completion. Coordinates and monitors workflow. Conduct building tours and meet regularly with Facilities Supervisors to review building needs and maintenance; advise on safety and security matters; monitor building damages and develop appropriate responses in conjunction with the House Team. Respond to student concerns of a residence facilities nature.
  • Provide, attend and lead training sessions and professional development for student staff and the Residence Society in consultation with the Residence Life team. Provide leadership for Queen's Residences Educational Programming and Community Development, within assigned buildings under the guidance of the Manager (Education), Residence Life.
  • Provide orientation and on-the-job training to employees in the unit. Escalates unresolved performance and/or disciplinary matters to management.
  • Liaise with other staff members within the Residences and University community and support the work of Queen's University Residences. Participate on committees and special projects within the residence and University system. Represent the department as required.
  • Respects diversity and promotes equity and inclusion.
  • Assist with recruitment; participate in screening and interviewing job candidates, and provide input into staff selection.
  • Reviews assignments and provides feedback on work to employees. Provides input on work performance to management staff.
  • Undertake other job-related duties as assigned (e.g. duties during emergency situations).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Undergraduate degree combined with at least 1 year of university/college full-time, professional residence experience (live-in experience would be considered an asset).
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
  • Understanding of the collegial administrative structure of a university; Queen's experience preferred.
  • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
