Overview of role:
The Advisor, Safety Risk Management provides timely, evidence-based safety risk insight to operational leadership within the airport operations portfolio to support consistent, informed decision-making during periods of operational change, instability, or elevated risk exposure.
The role applies the principles of Safety Management System (SMS) to identify hazards, assess risk, evaluate control effectiveness, and recommend mitigations that reduce safety risk and improve operational stability. The Advisor supports proactive risk management through operational engagement, safety governance, risk monitoring, and field-based safety assurance activities.
This role adds business value by identifying opportunities for mitigation or additional controls that reduce safety risk, strengthen operational resilience, and support safe, efficient, and reliable operations.
Key deliverables include:
Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
- Conduct hazard identification and risk-based assessments for major operational changes, including new station start-ups, service provider transitions, and significant equipment or infrastructure changes within the assigned airport portfolio, to identify operational risk exposure and inform management decision-making
- Lead and facilitate safety risk assessments related to changes in procedures, local deviations, and operating practices to identify hazards, assess associated risks, and recommend appropriate controls or mitigations
- Evaluate existing and proposed controls to determine their effectiveness in reducing operational risk
- Ensure hazards, controls, mitigations, residual risks, and risk acceptance decisions are appropriately documented, communicated, and maintained in accordance with established safety management processes
Safety Risk Monitoring and Analysis
- Monitor safety performance data, operational signals, occurrence trends, audit findings, and other risk indicators to identify areas of elevated risk exposure
- Conduct Safety Issue Assessments when defined risk triggers are met
- Analyze operational trends and emerging hazards to identify opportunities for additional controls, mitigations, or operational improvements
- Provide evidence-based recommendations to operational leadership regarding risk mitigation, escalation, or acceptance
Safety Governance and Safety Assurance
- Plan, facilitate, and present at regularly scheduled safety meetings within the assigned airport portfolio
- Communicate risk trends, emerging hazards, control effectiveness, and recommended actions to operational leadership
- Foster collaboration between operational stakeholders and safety teams, both internally and externally, to promote proactive risk management and improve safety performance
- Maintain a regular on-site safety presence within the assigned airport portfolio to observe work practices, identify emerging hazards, and assess the effectiveness of safety controls
- Promote and support the effective implementation of the WestJet Safety Management System
Experience and qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Aviation Safety Management, Safety Engineering, Human Factors, or a related discipline
- Industry-recognized Aviation Safety Management System (SMS) training
- Familiarity with the ICAO Safety Management Manual (SMM), IATA Standards and Recommended Practices (ISARPs), IOSA requirements, and aviation industry best practices
- Three or more years of experience in aviation, safety management, operational risk management, airport operations, or a related field
- Experience conducting hazard identification and safety risk assessments
- Experience writing reports and presenting safety risk information to operational leadership
- Experience analyzing operational data and identifying emerging safety risks and trends
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Strong facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and safety management systems
- Spanish language fluency is considered an asset
- Ability to travel unrestricted to all WestJet destinations (any required visas and/or travel documents are the sole responsibility of the candidate)
- Ability to obtain a Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)
