The Coordinator, Community Engagement recruits, supports and works collaboratively with chapter volunteers to engage the community in a variety of MS Society of Canada activities. This may include promoting and recruiting participants and sponsors for fundraising events, providing leadership to the planning and execution of MS Society signature events and approved chapter fundraising activities, recruiting and providing guidance to support group facilitators as well as building and maintaining relationships with local businesses and community organizations. The Coordinator will work collaboratively with the division fundraising and programs & services teams to ensure strategic alignment and adherence to all relevant policies, procedures and standards of practice. Cultivating meaningful relationships with chapter Council and committee volunteers, community partners, corporate and individual donors, event participants, leadership giving prospects, influencers, and top fundraisers will be critical to success.

This position is a position of trust. The incumbent will be required to complete the screening process including completion of appropriate background checks in compliance with the National Screening Measures Policy.

Key Responsibilities:

Fundraising Initiatives

  • Works in partnership with the ON division fundraising team and volunteers to ensure the success of signature fundraising events such as the MS Walk
  • Engages and works cooperatively with volunteers to achieve objectives
  • Provides insight into local trends in fundraising and community events
  • Maintains up-to-date event plans including critical paths and resource requirements
  • Assists in developing and monitoring of budgets and financial results
  • Promotes and manages relationships community I-Challenge MS event coordinators
  • Acts as a principal chapter contact for fundraising events by corresponding with sponsors and participants both new and existing, and responding to general inquiries
  • Liaises with National and Provincial MS fundraising colleagues and Directors in implementing all standards for MS Society of Canada signature events
  • Manages donor database
  • Provides support and guidance to volunteers in executing safe, fiscally responsible and appropriate fundraising activities that are aligned with the MS Society’s strategic plan, values, mission and vision

Programs and Services

  • Works collaboratively with the Regional Director and volunteers to identify, build and maintain relationships with community organizations to enhance programming for people affected by MS
  • Provides guidance and training as required to community support group facilitators
  • Works collaboratively with volunteers and division Education Manager to coordinate and deliver local and region-wide education sessions on a variety of MS related topics
  • Serves as local point person to help with inquiries from people affected by MS
  • Works collaboratively with Knowledge Network Navigators to provide excellent service and support to people affected by MS

Customer Service and Stewardship

  • Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including volunteers, community organizations and people affected by MS
  • Provides customer service to event participants, team captains, sponsors, donors and volunteers
  • Recruits and stewards relationships with donors, event participants and community organizations to improve overall results, deepen their engagement with the MS Society of Canada
  • Executes nationwide fundraising and programs & services strategies
  • Recruits, develops and maintains relationships corporate/business contacts, service clubs and other appropriate community organizations
  • Researches potential sponsors and works with Regional Director, division fundraising team and national strategic partnerships team to prepare sponsorship packages
  • Represents Chapter at community and business functions
  • Makes presentations to service clubs and organizations to gain their support

Volunteer Engagement

  • Recruits and engages volunteers needed to plan and execute fundraising activities
  • Recruits and provides guidance to programs & services volunteers
  • Works collaboratively with and provides support to chapter Council Fundraising and Research Programs & Services Leads and committee(s)
  • Manages volunteer records in central database

Communications & Marketing

  • Works collaboratively with Regional Director and division communications staff to develop press releases, media packages, feature stories and event coverage


  • University Degree or Community College Diploma in fundraising, communications, PR, business or marketing with 1-3 years of experience in fund development, volunteer engagement, special event planning, project management and/or public relations or the equivalent education and experience
  • A valid G driver's license and access to a reliable car is required
  • Ability to build relationships with a variety of key stakeholders (donors, etc.)
  • Experience recruiting, supporting and working collaboratively with volunteers
  • Proven success coordinating fundraising campaigns and events
  • Ability to work cooperatively with multiple internal stakeholders/departments to achieve common goals
  • Knowledge of sponsorship, marketing and media relations an asset
  • Self-starter with excellent customer service and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills, able to balance multiple priorities with overlapping deadlines
  • Strong verbal and communication skills with good interpersonal skills to communicate in a professional manner
  • Superior computer skills, with experience in Microsoft Office and an aptitude for database systems

Special Considerations:

  • Required to work occasional evenings/weekends (flex time arrangements available)
  • Physical demands of special events including packing, lifting carrying and loading
  • Occasional travel throughout the regional may be required
