Financial Controller

As our organization continues to expand, we are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Financial Controller to lead our finance function and help build the financial infrastructure required to support long-term growth.
This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, reporting, cash flow planning, construction financing, land development accounting, and operational financial controls. The successful candidate will bring a strong foundation in accounting and finance, combined with experience in residential construction and land development, and a passion for driving continuous improvement.
Reporting directly to ownership, the Financial Controller will serve as a strategic business partner while maintaining hands-on oversight of day-to-day financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Lead all financial operations, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury management, and financial planning.
- Prepare and deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Develop meaningful financial dashboards, KPIs, and performance metrics to support business decision-making.
- Provide profitability analysis and financial insights across homebuilding and development projects.
- Support ownership and senior leadership with strategic planning, investment analysis, and growth initiatives.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including:
- Accounts Payable
- Accounts Receivable
- Payroll
- General Ledger
- Bank Reconciliations
- Month-End and Year-End Close
- Ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Coordinate annual reviews, audits, tax filings, and relationships with external accounting firms.
Cash Flow, Treasury & Financing
- Develop and maintain detailed short- and long-term cash flow forecasts.
- Monitor liquidity requirements across active homebuilding and land development projects.
- Manage banking relationships and financing arrangements.
- Oversee construction lending facilities, draw requests, covenant reporting, and lender compliance requirements.
- Assist ownership with capital planning, financing strategies, and growth initiatives.
Construction & Development Accounting
- Oversee job costing systems and project cost tracking across all residential construction projects.
- Monitor work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and project profitability.
- Track construction budgets against actual costs and identify cost variances.
- Ensure accurate accounting for land acquisition costs, development expenditures, lot inventory, and project allocations.
- Manage lot payables and development obligations, ensuring compliance with contractual commitments and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate closely with construction, purchasing, and operations teams to improve forecasting, cost management, and project reporting.
Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
- Drive continuous improvement of financial systems, reporting processes, and internal controls.
- Lead the implementation and optimization of ERP systems, automation initiatives, and reporting tools.
- Develop scalable financial policies and procedures to support organizational growth.
- Ensure compliance with GST, payroll, corporate tax, and other regulatory requirements.
- Support risk management initiatives, insurance administration, and internal control processes.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance team members.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Establish clear performance expectations and support professional development within the finance function.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
- Minimum 8 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury management, and financial analysis.
- Experience managing full-cycle accounting operations and month-end/year-end reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software platforms.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to improve processes and implement financial controls within a growing organization.
Preferred
- CPA designation.
- Experience within residential homebuilding, construction, land development, or real estate development.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Job costing
- Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
- Construction financing and lender draws
- Holdbacks and progress billing
- Project profitability analysis
- Land development accounting
- Lot inventory and lot payable management
- Experience implementing ERP systems, automation tools, or business intelligence reporting solutions.
- Experience supporting organizational growth and scaling financial operations.
