Reporting to the Chair, the Department Manager will assume responsibility for the administrative, financial and operational management of the Department of Geography. The Department Manager is accountable to the Office of the CAO and primary designates with respect to human resources, financial, information technology, facilities and space planning and management. Duties will involve effective: budget and financial management providing proactive advice to the Chair by identifying and planning initiatives to meet current and emerging financial administration); administrative management of academic departmental functions; human resources management including administration of collective agreements, employment policies and protocols; allocation of space; tactical involvement with facilities and procurement, and management of information technology needs. The incumbent will participate as a representative of the department in broader strategic management initiatives related to business continuity planning and working with the Chair to develop strategic plans for departmental academic programs.

The Department Manager is required to have a strong understanding of the internal workings and policies of the University to effectively manage the day-to-day operations and provide support to senior faculty administrators ensuring administrative practices are in compliance with Collective Agreements, University and Legislated policies and regulations. The role assumes administrative responsibility in support of the academic and research missions of the Department of Geography. The Manager will assist in the development and implementation of proposals for new administrative and academic initiatives, timelines and budgets for projects and, as required, provide managerial support to these projects; facilitates interaction and communication amongst staff and ensures that appropriate resources are provided to administrative support staff. It is necessary for the Manager to interact with faculty, staff and students in a way that builds a positive departmental culture and to work collaboratively with other departments and offices within UTM and the University.


University Degree in commerce/business or related discipline with a specialization in accounting; prefer professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA) or in the final stages of certification, and/or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum five years’ related experience in a senior level position with a strong accounting/financial management responsibility. Experience in moderately complex budgeting, forecasting, auditing and analysis, and interpreting and applying policies and procedures, processing financial transactions, generating financial reports from a financial system, reconciling financial information, and process improvement. Demonstrated experience managing financial, physical and human resources. Experience administering policies and collective agreements; strategic planning experience regarding all aspects of Departmental structure, programs (administrative and academic) and services. Management and supervisory experience required.

Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet applications and good knowledge of word processing software, preferably in Excel and Microsoft Word required. Experience with the University’s Financial Information system (FIS), Research Information System (RIS) and Human Resource Information System (HRIS) or similar systems a strong asset. Demonstrated knowledge of advanced management and financial accounting, statistics, business finance, Canadian income taxation and internal controls. Excellent decision-making and presentation skills.

Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written) organizational and time management skills; strong leadership and team building skills; ability to exercise sound judgment, tact and initiative; high level of attention to detail and accuracy and demonstrated commitment to service; demonstrated ability to deal effectively with staff and faculty at all levels of the organization; ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to analyze large amounts of complex data and make recommendations based on findings. Experience applying general accepted accounting principles and practices within a public sector environment; experience in fund research accounting an asset. Working knowledge of policies and procedures of the University of Toronto and their application with the University of Toronto Mississauga.
