Access Barrie combines customer service, marking and communications, and transit and parking strategy. This strategic portfolio reflects the importance and need for the City to easily and efficiently connect the people who live and work in Barrie to the people, places, services and information that matters to them. Marketing and Communications work closely with staff from all departments, the Mayor, CAO and City Council to develop corporate communications plans and marketing strategies in support of City initiatives, programs and services.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Manager of Marketing and Communications, the Graphic Designer position provides design expertise to all projects that require corporate branding, and participates in the planning, development and production of graphic materials. Specifically, this position works with internal and external clients in designing logos, presentations, marketing brochures, posters, and flyers for City of Barrie publications and events as well as maintains a photo library for current and future marketing needs. Additionally, this position maintains and contributes to the content of the City's internal and external website to ensure effective marketing and communication of projects, programs, and services within the City of Barrie. Lastly, this position works with Access Barrie coworkers and City staff to design, develop, and implement a consistent communication strategy for the City. Overall, this position plays an integral role in maintaining consistency and professionalism of the corporate brand.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

Three (3) year College Diploma in Graphic Design or related discipline

Two (2) years of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
Demonstrated experience in photography, copywriting, and graphic design with a creative portfolio containing work samples
Demonstrated experience utilizing computerized design software

Thorough knowledge of computerized design solutions, principles, and concepts
Working knowledge of traditional and new marketing concepts, communications technologies, and graphic design technology

Demonstrated ability to:
Develop, promote and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Exercise discretion and judgment when handling confidential, sensitive, and/or controversial information
Interact effectively and courteously with all levels of staff and contacts in a political and community/client service environment
Maintain confidentiality and ensure the security of private information in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
Perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission, and values
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and/or peak period workloads
Intermediate computer literacy utilizing computerized design software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Flash and Microsoft Office
Intermediate interpersonal, written communication, presentation, organizational, time management, client management, public relations, and customer service skills
Intermediate multitasking and prioritization skills in order to set priorities, meet deadlines and manage work demands

Other Important Information:
Location: City Hall, 70 Collier Street, Barrie, Ontario

Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, some non-standard hours may apply

Wage: This position is a temporary full-time, non-union position with the following pay level and 2019 pay range:
  • Pay Level: Level 9
  • Yearly Salary: $60,134.34 to $76,767.24 per year
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $33.04 to $42.18 per hour
Benefits: This position includes single health and dental benefits, prorated paid sick time based on the expected duration of employment, and prorated vacation time based on calendar year and in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.
