A Dental Assistant Level II provides advanced chairside assistance to dentists and specialists, supports clinical procedures, maintains patient records, ensures infection prevention and control standards are met, and performs intraoral duties authorized under provincial regulations. The Dental Assistant Level II plays a key role in delivering high-quality patient care while promoting a positive patient experience.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Duties
- Prepare treatment rooms, instruments, and materials for dental procedures.
- Assist dentists during examinations, restorative treatments, oral surgeries, endodontic procedures, and other dental treatments.
- Take and process dental radiographs in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Perform intraoral procedures permitted for Level II dental assistants, including:
- Placement and removal of rubber dams.
- Placement and removal of matrix bands and wedges.
- Application of topical anesthetics and desensitizing agents.
- Coronal polishing (where authorized).
- Fluoride application.
- Taking preliminary impressions and bite registrations.
- Placement and removal of temporary restorative materials as delegated.
- Provide post-operative instructions and oral hygiene education to patients.
Patient Care
- Welcome and prepare patients for treatment.
- Review and update medical and dental histories.
- Monitor patient comfort and respond to concerns during treatment.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
Infection Prevention and Sterilization
- Follow all infection prevention and control protocols.
- Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and equipment.
- Monitor sterilization records and maintain compliance documentation.
- Ensure operatories are properly stocked and maintained.
Administrative Support
- Maintain accurate patient records and charting.
- Schedule appointments and manage treatment follow-ups as needed.
- Assist with insurance documentation and treatment estimates.
- Coordinate laboratory cases and maintain tracking records.
Equipment and Inventory
- Monitor dental supplies and inventory levels.
- Order and restock clinical materials as required.
- Perform routine maintenance checks on dental equipment.
- Report equipment malfunctions and arrange servicing when necessary.
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Dental Assisting Level II program.
- Current registration/licensure as required by provincial regulatory authorities.
- Certification in Dental Radiography.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control standards.
- Proficiency with dental practice management software and electronic records.
