SNC-Lavalin Inc. is seeking an Engagement Specialist and Environmental Planner who would like more experience and responsibility combined with exposure to a wide variety of infrastructure (e.g., transit, road/highway, power, etc.) and other environmental assessment planning projects. The ideal candidate will be a motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter with a minimum of 5 years of experience with environmental assessments and consulting services in Canada.
How will you contribute to the team?
To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
Working with and supporting project managers in carrying out environmental assessments and permitting within a variety of sectors.
Coordinating, organizing, preparing for, attending, and documenting project meetings (internal and external).
Coordinating the development of Indigenous, public, and regulatory engagement programs, including municipal, provincial, federal, and territorial agencies.
Preparing environmental assessment process documentation, including notices, consultation materials, letters to stakeholders.
Executing public and Indigenous engagement programs, including planning workshops and open houses, tracking comments and concern, responding to information requests.
Preparing socio-economic studies, including conducting background research and analysis (may include supporting health impact assessments as well as gender-based analysis).
Coordinating work of other environmental specialists (i.e., fisheries, terrestrial ecologists, noise, air, archaeology, built heritage, etc.), including management of subcontractors.
Collaborating with technical and professional staff across the company in completing assignments.
Overseeing and directing junior professionals in the execution of tasks, including providing senior review.
Developing and maintaining project/task schedules and budgets for project components, and monitoring project progress, work hours, budgets and expenditures using project scheduling and cost control tools.
Coordinating with government/regulatory agencies and internal technical leads to obtain environmental permits/approvals for construction of a variety of projects.
Supporting business development efforts, including potential client/prospect identification, proposal writing and client-facing activities.
Supporting group development by participating in staffing decisions.
Participating in industry events through presentations, papers at conferences or through membership in industry organizations.
Mentoring and supporting the development of junior professionals.
Keeping up to date on regulatory changes and advising project staff and clients regarding these changes.
What will you contribute?
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Health or Social Sciences).
5+ years of related experience in managing and coordinating environmental assessments, securing construction permits/approvals.
Familiarity with environmental assessment processes (federal, provincial, and territorial (in particular, the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act is an asset).
Knowledge of other relevant environmental legislation and federal/provincial policy.
Experience conducting socio-economic baseline studies and impact assessments.
Experience designing and executing consultation programs (Indigenous, non-Indigenous and stakeholder).
Experience collecting, analyzing and incorporating Indigenous knowledge and land use studies into EAs.
Experience working on municipal, transit and transportation projects in Ontario would be an asset.
Exceptional organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
Demonstrated experience in conflict resolutions.
Ability to plan and prioritize workload to manage multiple assignments at one time.
Valid Class G driver’s license.
Willingness to travel for short time periods.
Full or provisional membership in a professional body (e.g. Registered Professional Planner (RPP and MCIP); Canadian Environmental Professional (EP); or Project Management Professional (PMP) is an asset.
