Position Summary
The Excavator Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators and related heavy equipment on construction sites. This role supports a variety of earthworks, site development, road construction, grading, and general construction activities. The successful candidate will work closely with supervisors, laborers, equipment operators, and truck drivers to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
- Operate excavators of various sizes safely and efficiently.
- Perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, ditching, loading, and material handling activities.
- Excavate around existing utilities while maintaining required clearances and safety procedures.
- Load trucks and move materials as required.
- Perform rough and finish excavation work according to project plans and grade requirements.
- Utilize GPS, laser, or grade control systems when required.
Site Operations
- Interpret site plans, drawings, utility locates, and grade stakes.
- Maintain awareness of underground and overhead hazards.
- Work safely around crews, equipment, traffic, and public areas.
- Support project schedules by coordinating with other crew members and subcontractors.
- Assist with site preparation, cleanup, and other construction-related activities as needed.
Equipment Maintenance
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Complete equipment inspection reports and maintenance documentation.
- Monitor equipment condition and promptly report defects or repair requirements.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and ensure proper fueling and lubrication.
- Operate equipment in a manner that minimizes wear and extends service life.
Safety
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and toolbox talks.
- Ensure trenching, excavation, and utility work are completed safely and in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Immediately report incidents, near misses, hazards, and unsafe conditions.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of excavator operating experience in construction, earthworks, or civil projects preferred.
- Experience with underground utility installation, road construction, or site development is considered an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and grade stakes.
- Knowledge of excavation safety practices and utility locating procedures.
- Strong understanding of equipment operation, maintenance, and safe work practices.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License required; higher classifications considered an asset.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Experience:
- Operating Excavators: 3 years (preferred)
