The Printing Press Operator must be able to lead a crew and perform all stages of the printing process, from the press set up to the finished product. Responsibilities of the position include operation of a six-colour press. This job requires strong organizational and time management abilities to ensure that the printing is done on time, with a high level of quality control. He or she will troubleshoot problems within the printing process, including operation of the machinery, throughput of paper, colour adjustment and alignment issues and other finishing processes.
· Lead and delegate duties to crew as required
· Review docket information to ensure proper job is produced and conduct the required inspections to meet quality standards (colour, copy, registration, bleeds, relief areas, etc.)
· Setting up and operating machinery for printing and monitoring machine daily.
· Check samples, monitor quality of product and take corrective action when required.
· Monitor press operations and ensure registration and proper-ink water balance
· Achieve the highest print quality with minimal scrap; and monitor the waste and spoilage during run mode, make adjustments as needed.
· Utilize the ERP system to clock into jobs, record production and waste counts.
· Verify copy and achieve/maintain colour to approved targets i.e. proof, pantone book, sample or signed sheet.
· Keep all work area equipment clean
· Handling of core material (loading, stacking)
· Hang printing plates, coating plates and change blankets when needed, make necessary adjustments, remove and clean plates at the end of press run.
· Select and load appropriate inks
· Help monitor levels of supplies and ensure that adequate stocks are maintained.
· Monitor regular press run for quality using computer control console
· Fill ink fountains and control colour and viscosity
· Direct press crew to set up, operate and shut down press.
· Perform regular maintenance and minor repairs on the press and associated equipment
· Troubleshoot press to help reduce downtime and inefficiencies.
· Perform scheduled maintenance when required
· Assist in the training of fellow crew members.
· Adherence to GMP’s food safety policies, H&S policies and SOP’s to promote product safety, food safety and quality.
· Perform other duties as required by Management.
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED
· At least 3 yrs experience running a Heidelberg 6 colour press
· Technical knowledge of lithographic processes and machines (Process and pantone colours, conventional and uv inks/coatings).
· Experience with in-line colour control and X-rite spectrophotometers.
· Mechanical aptitude.
· Detailed eye for colour.
· Good oral and written communications skills.
· Ability to work individually as well as in a team environment.
· Ability to supervise and direct crew.
· Good organization skills and leadership skills.
· Basic computer skills.
· Ability and willingness to work 3 rotating shifts (Days, Nights and Afternoons)
