Overview:
Avison Young is seeking an experienced litigation and commercial transactions attorney to expand its legal function. The successful candidate will report to the Deputy General Counsel, North American Litigation & Employment. On a project by project and/or assignment by assignment basis, the successful candidate will work closely with each of the company’s attorneys and business professionals. Avison Young’s legal department currently consists of five attorneys in the U.S., three attorneys in the U.K., an equity administrator, and a project specialist who support the company’s business functions across its global offices. In addition, there are two lawyers and a paralegal in Canada who provide legal support to Avison Young clients.
The successful candidate will most likely be based in Avison Young’s Toronto, Ontario office, however, depending upon the successful candidate, the attorney’s primary work location may be another Avison Young office in Canada.
Responsibilities:
Avison Young is seeking an attorney to act as litigation counsel for the company in Canada with responsibility for the management of a wide range of matters, including commercial disputes and collections matters. The attorney will also provide legal advice and counsel to internal clients to identify legal risk and potential litigation and take a leading role in managing and resolving pre-litigation disputes. The attorney will be responsible for hiring, supervising, and collaborating with outside counsel and driving efficiency in outside counsel spend. The attorney will identify risk and changes in the law, regulations, and business environment and proactively set and execute strategies to mitigate risk and position the company for success. This attorney will also provide end-to-end legal support for commercial transactions, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating transactional documents. The attorney will partner with Avison Young’s senior management, finance, local company offices, other stakeholders within the company, and external counsel to ensure timely and effective decision-making for disputes, litigation, and proposed transactions. In addition, the attorney will provide other legal services as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer considering the successful candidate’s areas of experience.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department

At least 3 years of litigation experience
- Proven track record of managing or handling commercial litigation

Experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and related documents

Ability to simultaneously manage multiple complex matters in a fast paced, high-energy environment while meeting deadlines

Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail

Ability to lead projects and work independently with little supervision and direction
- Sound legal and business judgment

Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels within Avison Young and individuals outside of Avison Young
