Job Title: Lands Technician
Reporting Relationship and Authority
The Lands Technician works within the KFN Lands Department and reports directly to the Environmental Manager.
The Lands Technician has the authority to:
· Manage technical equipment associated with the Lands Department, including computers, mapping equipment and software, surveying equipment, monitoring equipment, boats and all-terrain vehicles, and other related items;
· Coordinate the varying aspects of the position in order to maximize productivity and efficiency;
· Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly work plans;
· Identify projects, programs, and training that increase KFN’s land management capacity and jurisdiction;
· Assist with environmental and other monitoring activities in collaboration with the appropriate agencies;
· Manage on-Reserve land management and leasing activities and documents;
· Liaise with the Hunters and Trappers Committee; and
· Maintain the Lands Technician office.
Major Areas of Responsibility
The overall mandate of the Technician position is to provide technical support to the KFN Lands Department in the management and monitoring of both on-Reserve and off-Reserve lands.
The Technician’s main areas of responsibility are to:
· Maintain and operate technical equipment associated with the Lands Department;
· Coordinate and document meetings and workshops associated with lands and resources matters;
· Maintain the Lands Technician office, including all related files;
· Support on-Reserve land planning, development, and leasing;
· Assist the Manager with communication, liaison, and other functions of the Lands Department;
· Participate as needed in a variety of environmental monitoring activities within the KFN territory, including on the Hay River Dene Reserve; and
· Other assigned duties as required.

Working Conditions
The Technician has a wide range of responsibilities within a small but dynamic office setting. Although much of the work is office based, there is also the requirement to do field work under varying seasons and weather conditions. The incumbent will have to manage and coordinate these activities in a manner that reduces the potential for stress. Learning and adapting to new information and technology will be an ongoing aspect of the position, so there must be a willingness to carry out self-study and take training as opportunities arise.
Standard administrative work hours and policies will apply, although field work may require flexible hours. KFN provides a competitive salary and benefits package, encourages participation in traditional cultural activities, and offers a smoke-free work environment.
Qualifications
The normal qualifications for this position are:
· High school graduation, with some upper-level science course work, although some form of post- secondary education or training related to land management or environmental science or monitoring is preferred;
· Strong computer and technical skills and the interest and ability to learn how to operate a variety of technical equipment;
· The willingness and ability to travel on the land in a variety of ways, including walking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, canoeing, and boating;
· The willingness and ability to engage with the public for the purpose of addressing land management issues;
· The ability to work independently;
· An interest in protecting Aboriginal and Treaty rights;
· A valid NWT driver’s licence and a willingness to travel on KFN business;
· Knowledge of, or the ability to converse in, Dene Zhatie is an asset;
· Knowledge of the socio-economic and cultural history and of the K’atå’odeeche First Nation is an asset; and
· Knowledge of ArcGIS is an asset.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is negotiable, depending on qualifications.
