YARD AND TRANSPORTATION FOREMAN

We employ in-house sales and design professionals with the skills necessary to conceptualize, estimate, and deliver everything required to meet customer demands.
Nelson Lumber is in pursuit of a Yard and Transportation Foreman as we enter and grow the Company’s presence in the greater area of Calgary, Alberta. This position is to be filled by someone with experience overseeing material handling and transportation functions, has an ability for establishing and ensuring efficient standard operating procedure, and is committed to quality execution to enhance customer service. Nelson Lumber has the immediate need to engage this resource.
Although growth and evolution of our business in this market will likely require changing of locations, this position will be based within the Calgary, Alberta area and will report to the General Manager of the Calgary division. The Yard and Transportation Foreman will work closely with the rest of the Calgary management team and contribute to accomplishing Nelson Lumber’s aggressive entry and growth plans for the region. In doing so this individual will execute the responsibilities listed below:
- Manage physical custody of product on site as it transitions through all steps of the inventory turn process.
- Involvement in establishing standard operating procedures and ensuring that they are effectively followed in day-to-day operations.
- Oversee and schedule order picking and delivery to meet needs of customers as well as ensure accuracy and compliance with commitments made to customers. This involves building lumber and building supply packages, cutting and assembling engineered wood product packages, and staging truss packages. Subsequently, orders to be applied to an effective quality assurance program prior to loading and shipment on Company owned transport equipment or subcontracted service.
- Significant involvement in ensuring the integrity of physical inventory and associated quantity/valuation in operating system. This includes the ongoing and annual process of revaluing inventory (quantities and valuation).
- Manage yard and transportation staff which includes their effective recruitment, efficient training and deployment, critical evaluation, and motivation. This also applies to any applicable subcontracted services employed by the operation.
- Manage requirements for equipment as it relates to establishing necessary capacity, procuring, disposing, and maintenance.
- Maintain orderly functioning, condition, and presentation of the operational physical location.
- Participate in required committees and ensure compliance with all Nelson Lumber Health & Safety procedures on site and off site as applicable.
- Hands on and direct execution of all yard and transportation tasks during initial market entry. This to evolve into more oversight for this role as operation grows.
Possession of the following skills and aptitude would be a definite asset:
- The ability to exercise leadership, motivate, and stimulate execution of outcomes from a group of workers.
- Proven experience in managing yard, warehouse, transportation functions of a building material sales or similar business.
- A track record showing the ability to increase/adjust capacity and satisfy the needs of a progressing business with aggressive growth targets and pace.
- A high energy, career focused personality with passion for following through, being successful and accomplishing.
