Position Summary
The Sanitation Worker is responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining assigned areas, equipment, and surfaces to meet health, safety, and hygiene standards. The role involves the safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment in a range of environments, including cold and wet spaces, and requires strict adherence to established sanitation procedures and workplace safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean, wash, and sanitize floors, walls, drains, work surfaces, equipment, and fixtures according to established schedules and standards.
- Operate cleaning equipment such as pressure washers, floor scrubbers, hoses, and hand tools safely and correctly.
- Measure, mix, and apply cleaning and sanitizing chemicals in accordance with label directions, dilution ratios, and safety data sheets (SDS).
- Remove waste and debris, empty containers, and dispose of materials in the correct waste streams.
- Inspect completed work to confirm cleanliness and sanitation standards are met; re-clean areas as required.
- Report equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, low supply levels, and maintenance needs to the supervisor promptly.
- Complete cleaning logs, checklists, and other required documentation accurately.
- Follow all health, safety, and sanitation regulations, including WHMIS and site-specific procedures.
- Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Support the team with additional cleaning and general duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions, including safety procedures and chemical handling directions.
- Physically able to perform the demands of the role (see Physical Requirements below).
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred
- Previous experience in sanitation, janitorial, cleaning, or facility maintenance.
- WHMIS certification or willingness to complete training upon hire.
- Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, equipment, and sanitation standards in a commercial or industrial setting.
Working Conditions
- Regular work in cold and wet environments, including refrigerated or damp spaces.
- Routine exposure to cleaning agents, sanitizers, and industrial chemicals; safe handling and PPE use are mandatory.
- Exposure to noise, odours, steam, and slippery surfaces.
- May work early mornings, evenings, overnights, weekends, or holidays depending on the site schedule.
- Fast-paced environment with defined cleaning windows and deadlines.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to [25 kg / 50 lbs] and handle equipment safely.
- Manual dexterity to operate cleaning tools and equipment.
- Ability to tolerate temperature changes and prolonged exposure to wet and cold conditions.
- Ability to wear PPE, including gloves, boots, eye protection, and protective clothing, throughout the shift.
