The Beach BIA represents more than 300 businesses along Queen Street East in one of Toronto’s most distinctive neighbourhoods. Known for its discovery retail, foodie flair, café culture, patios, wellness experiences and unique connection to parks, green spaces and Lake Ontario, The Beach is a thriving destination where independent businesses and community come together.
The Beach BIA is seeking a collaborative, community-minded Executive Director to lead the day-to-day operations of the organization and work alongside an engaged Board of Management to advance our strategic priorities, support our members and strengthen The Beach as a vibrant place to shop, dine, explore, work and do business.
About the Role
Reporting to the Board of Management through the Chair, the Executive Director provides operational leadership, strategic coordination, financial stewardship, member engagement, advocacy and organizational administration.
Working within a collaborative governance model, the Executive Director partners closely with an engaged Board of Management to implement Board-approved priorities and strategic plans while providing professional advice, operational leadership and informed recommendations.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring a balance of strategic thinking, relationship building, project management and operational execution.
As the primary liaison between the Board, more than 300 member businesses, the City of Toronto, community organizations and key stakeholders, the Executive Director plays an important role in supporting business vitality, enhancing the public realm and fostering a vibrant, welcoming and economically resilient neighbourhood.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the day-to-day operations and administration of The Beach BIA.
Build strong relationships with member businesses, understand emerging business needs and advocate for member interests.
Implement the Board’s Strategic Plan, annual work plans and organizational priorities and provide regular progress reporting.
Develop productive working relationships with City staff, elected officials, community organizations and other stakeholders.
Help members navigate relevant City programs, services, grants and opportunities.
Coordinate destination marketing, seasonal promotions, community events and placemaking initiatives that celebrate The Beach’s unique identity.
Support the Streetscape Committee and initiatives that enhance and steward the public realm and pedestrian experience.
Manage and coordinate contracted service providers, including social media and marketing professionals, event support personnel, project consultants, vendors and volunteers as required, ensuring initiatives are delivered effectively, on schedule and aligned with Board priorities and organizational objectives.
Manage the BIA’s annual operating budget of approximately $500,000 and oversee financial administration in collaboration with professional service providers.
Coordinate contracts, vendor relationships and procurement processes, including Requests for Proposals (RFPs), in accordance with applicable policies.
Prepare timely Board and committee agendas, reports, presentations, executive summaries and briefing materials.
Maintain the organization’s Board management platform and ensure accurate records management, document retention, meeting documentation and organizational reporting.
Coordinate Annual General Meeting preparation, including reports, presentations, member communications, supporting documentation and meeting logistics.
Use existing organizational dashboards, performance measures, reporting tools and relevant information to support evidence-informed planning, Board decision-making and implementation of the Strategic Plan.
Identify grant opportunities, partnerships and funding initiatives that advance organizational priorities.
Identify emerging opportunities and operational risks and bring appropriate recommendations forward to the Board.
Ensure the BIA operates in accordance with Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 19 and applicable City of Toronto policies, procedures, reporting requirements and deadlines.
Qualifications
We are interested in candidates from a range of professional backgrounds who can demonstrate strong organizational leadership, operational capability and an understanding of community-based economic development.
The successful candidate will ideally bring:
Experience in organizational leadership, business improvement areas, economic development, municipal government, non-profit or association management, community development or a related field.
Demonstrated success managing projects, competing priorities and organizational operations.
Strong financial management and budget administration skills.
Exceptional relationship-building, communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
Strong organizational and project-management skills with excellent attention to detail.
Experience supporting Boards and committees and preparing professional reports, presentations, meeting materials and executive summaries.
Experience managing contractors, consultants, vendors, community partners and volunteers.
Comfort using Board management software, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and contemporary digital collaboration and reporting tools.
Ability to interpret organizational information, dashboards and performance measures to support planning and informed decision-making.
Knowledge of municipal government processes, Toronto’s business community or Business Improvement Areas is considered an asset.
Compensation & Working Environment
Salary: $80,000–$100,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package, commensurate with experience.
This is a full-time permanent position. Hybrid and in-person work arrangements are negotiable based on operational requirements and the community-facing nature of the role.
Some evening and weekend attendance is required for Board and committee meetings, community events and seasonal programming.
