SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Reports to the Supervisor of Waste Collections. Performs labouring duties and operates tools and equipment for the clearance of waste and debris within the public right of way.
GENERAL DUTIES
Performs labouring duties for the Waste Collections section including but not limited to the downtown core. Duties vary dependant on season and service level required. Works in a variety of adverse weather conditions (e.g. hot/cold temperatures, snow/rain/ice).
Labouring duties include but are not limited to: climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, shovelling, loading, unloading and handling of materials, tools and equipment to deliver waste collection services.
Operates hand tools, power tools and mechanical equipment with competence for waste collection programs. Such tools and equipment include, but are not limited to litter pickers, rakes, shovels, brooms, picks, drills, hand/power saws, weed eaters, push carts, snow and leaf blowers, power washers, vacuums, sidewalk sweepers, and compactors.
Performs basic inspections and minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
Works as part of a team within a crew setting and independently.
Completes documentation such as but not limited to daily activity logs, equipment sheets and various reports, as required.
Interacts with the general public, representatives of external agencies, supervisors and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner.
Works in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Previous experience and ability to operate equipment and tools related to the duties listed above, in a safe and predictable manner. Preference for the completion of a High School Diploma.
2. Must have excellent hand/eye coordination and have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, pull, push, bend, reach, grip, step, walk, drive, twist, climb, squat and carry objects weighing up to 23 Kg (50 lbs.) with an occasional requirement to lift up to 32 Kg (70 lbs).
3. Must be able to understand and follow detailed procedures, instructions and take direction. Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally.
4. Must be available and able to work shifts and emergency overtime, including weekends, nights, etc. with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in adverse road and weather conditions.
5. Must have solid interpersonal skills and ability to interact with and assist the public, co-workers, supervisors and all stakeholders with courtesy and professionalism.
6. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including W.H.M.I.S.
7. Possession of a valid Class “G” Driver’s Licence preferred.
