What is the opportunity?
As Trade Surveillance Officer, you provide best-in-class trade surveillance oversight to manage risks, and to ensure compliance with provincial/territorial securities legislation and internal policies and procedures for Royal Mutual Funds Inc. (RMFI) distribution channels. This is accomplished through effective and efficient daily reviews of trade reports, including follow up with the appropriate individuals and groups where concerns have been identified, and the identification of concerning trends or patterns related to trades, commissions on accounts, assets under administration or commissions earned.
RMFI has over 9,500 licensed representatives conducting over 30,000 transactions per day.
What will you do?
Timely review of daily reports for suspicious activity and suitability of advice
Timely review of monthly/quarterly reports for trend analysis
Escalate issues to management (Branch Compliance Officers) or other appropriate individuals. Follow up to ensure all necessary corrective action has been taken on escalations
Follow, review and enhance procedures that clearly show “evidence of review” and follow-up that will be satisfactory to the regulators
Analyze reports to identify potential areas of risk, advise management of potential issues as they arise and make recommendations regarding appropriate actions to take
Educate RMFI Compliance colleagues, business partners and the field, regarding compliance requirements, gaps, trends, etc.
Assist with developing and implementing new or enhanced surveillance program practices to ensure effective operational efficiencies and to ensure compliance requirements are met in all circumstances
Prepare trade data for supervisory investigations and MFDA inquiries and other special initiatives.
What do you need to succeed?
2+ years’ experience in investment industry and/or compliance in the financial industry, including completion of the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) and/or the Branch Compliance Officer (BCO) course or willingness to complete course immediately upon joining RBC
Up-to-date knowledge of Canadian securities industry, including securities regulations
Strong PC skills, including solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, MS Access as well as experience in creating macros using VBA or using SQL and programming knowledge
Effective analytics, data management and problem solving skills
A growth mindset, always looking to improve and streamline processes and reporting
Excellent interpersonal and highly developed communication skills (verbal and written)
Data analytics and data visualization tools
Strong understanding of RBC Investment and banking systems
Experience or understanding of financial analysis and financial reporting
Innovative self-starter with strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in an unstructured environment
