Salary Range: SP4, Level 6, $113,564 - $141,955 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Senior Specialist, Reclamation and Conservation – Hybrid
The Alberta Energy Regulator is currently recruiting a Senior Specialist, Reclamation and Conservation, to join its talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Applications Branch, Mining Team.
As a Senior Specialist, Reclamation and Conservation you will be responsible for providing technical and science-based recommendations in the areas of Conservation and Reclamation on routine and complex decisions at each stage of the energy activity lifecycle, ensuring provincial policy, conservation and reclamation quality objectives, guidelines and management strategies are incorporated into project decisions and organizational initiatives.
Work collaboratively with a wide range of professionals to ensure the safe, environmentally responsible, and efficient recovery of energy resources throughout the regulatory lifecycle of energy projects. What your day-to-day will look like:
Review applications, conservation, and reclamation submissions for all Mining development projects in the province that could impact reclamation outcomes. Provides technical conditions and requirements for approvals related to conservation and reclamation, and reporting.
Work with a diverse network of experts across industry, academia, and government to remain current on emerging issues, identify policy gaps and support policy initiatives with a view to their practical application to energy sector activities and AER business processes.
Participate in the development of and lead the implementation of new government policy, regulatory frameworks, directives, and cumulative effects management to achieve desired outcomes.
Support/provide expertise to inspectors, approval coordinators and consultants on mitigation and monitoring requirements and remedial strategies related to unplanned events, incidents, non-compliances, and/or investigations.
Perform desktop surveillance activities, review annual reports and submissions, and conduct site visits as required to assess and make recommendations on industry performance and compliance related to regulations and approval conditions.
What we’re looking for in you:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental, Conservation Sciences, Biological Sciences, or related science discipline, with a minimum of 10+ years of related experience; or a Master of Science Degree and a minimum of 7+ years of experience.
Knowledge and understanding of land conservation and reclamation legislation, principles, techniques, standards, and issues for both terrestrial and wetland is considered an asset.
