POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN MICROBIOME RESEARCH
Dr Anita Kozyrskyj - SyMBIOTA Lab
Funded by CIHR’s $13M Canadian Microbiome Initiative, the SyMBIOTA research team is investigating the
impact of early life exposures (maternal stress, birth mode, antibiotic use and infant diet) on the infant intestinal
microbiome (microbes, metabolites and sIgA immunity), and subsequent development of overweight, allergic
disease and neurodevelopmental delay in childhood, using data obtained from mothers and infants in the
CHILD Cohort Study (http://www.childstudy.ca/).
We are seeking to recruit an exceptional Postdoctoral Fellow to analyze infant gut microbiome data in relation to
pre and postnatal exposures, as well as to child health outcomes in the CHILD Cohort Study. The analysis
repertoire will range from standard epidemiologic testing for associations, and structural equation and repeated
measures modeling to microbiome-specific techniques, such as supervised and unsupervised learning, and
principle coordinates analysis (based on phylogenetic distance metrics).
The position offers an exciting and unique opportunity to become part of the largest infant microbiome study in
North America and contribute novel data to the evolving area of microbiome research. The candidate will become
a key part of our inter-disciplinary team of microbiologists, evolutionary biologists, immunologists, pediatric
allergists and statisticians across 5 Canadian universities. The candidate will also have an opportunity to network
with other microbiome researchers through the pan-Canadian IMPACTT-microbiome network.
The ideal candidate will be a highly ambitious, self-motivated individual with a background in advanced
statistics/bioinformatics (SAS, R-statistics), exceptional oral and written English communication and a strong
publication record. Completion of postgraduate courses in biostatistics and epidemiology is a requirement.
Experience in epidemiological research and/or analysis of microbiome datasets, including familiarity with the
microbiome bioinformatics and analysis program, QIIME, is an asset. Previous postdoctoral students with the
SyMBIOTA team have been highly competitive, receiving funding from Banting, CIHR, AIHS and the Killam
