Job Title: Mental Health Therapist
Reports To: Mental Wellness Case Supervisor
Division: Health Programs

Job Purpose
Reporting to the Mental Wellness Case Supervisor, the Mental Health Therapistwill carry out the duties and activities in partnership with the Mental Wellness Team and the SERDC Children and Youth Programs. The Mental Health Therapist is a clinical integrated practice that collaborates with both Mental Wellness and Clinical Team in individual case planning with advocacy for services.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Counseling and Assessments
· Conduct personal, family, and community assessments and deliver mental health services to clients affected by historical and present trauma.
· Conduct individual assessments, providing recommendations for both Wellness and Jordan’s Principle programs and the Medical Receiving Centre.
· Advocate on behalf of those in need, assist with self-help initiatives, or make referrals for specific services required for short- or long-term intervention.
· Stay updated on best practices, trends, and developments in mental health and community services to continuously enhance program delivery.
2. Specialized Services
· Provide Therapeutic Intervention Models of practice for counselling with culturally sensitive approaches:
o Trauma Informed Practice
o Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
o Problem Solving Therapy
o Solution Focus Therapy
o Integrated Narrative Therapy Approach
o Group and Family Therapy sessions
· Provide clinical services to address the following:
o Family/Domestic Violence
o Addictions
o Suicide
o PTSD
o Grief and Loss
o Developmental Delays
3. Documentation and Reporting
· Provide regular documentation and reporting on client services, including:
o Reports to the Mental Health Program Manager and Jordan’s Principle Coordinator regarding referrals and outcomes.
o Maintain confidential client files and submit monthly statistical reports.
o Prepare and maintain tracking sheets, weekly schedules, and emergency response reports.
4. Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills
Education
- Master’s degree in psychology or social work (clinical specialization) including education in mental health assessment, Social Science, Human Services or equivalent.
- Registered with a governing body (such as Psychological Association of Manitoba (PAM) or The Manitoba Institute of Registered Social Workers (MIRSW).
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated skills and experience working with First Nation families and communities and presenting issues.
- Comprehensive knowledge and advanced level of practice in clinical assessment and treatment models including individual, couple, family and group therapy interventions.
- Demonstrated ability to problem-solve complex situations and manage sensitive issues.
- Comprehensive knowledge and skill in a range of intervention modalities.
- Nonviolent Crisis intervention skills.
- Skilled at working with people with co-occurring mental health disorders.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
- Valid Mental Health First Aid Certificate.
- Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate.
- Experienced in case management and the development of integrated care plans.
- High level of organizational, administrative, and facilitative skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with individuals at all levels.
- Ability to travel to Southeast First Nation communities on short notice, including overnight travel for up to five (5) consecutive days
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Must have a valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle.
- Must produce a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search).
- Must produce a satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Must produce a satisfactory Adult Abuse Registry Check.
DESIRED:
- Applied Suicide Intervention Skills preferred.
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification.
- Life Skills Coaching Training will be an asset.
- Ability to speak Ojibwe.
