A university degree in Criminology, Police Studies, Criminal Justice, Adult Education or other behavioral sciences (Psychology, Sociology, etc.) relevant to law enforcement, plus seven (7) years of operational policing experience, including traffic enforcement, fatal collision investigation and supervision.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- one year of experience for one year of education.
Candidates must be eligible for appointment as a Police Officer in the Province of Alberta in accordance with the Police Act (Alberta).
Preference will be given to candidates with ten (10) or more years of operational policing experience, consistent with industry standards.
Requirement:
- Demonstrate experience providing frontline supervision, including shift management, operational briefings, incident leadership, and real-time decision-making in dynamic environments.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable legislation (Criminal Code of Canada, Police Act (Alberta), Charter, Traffic Safety Act (Alberta)) and ability to apply policing authorities, ensure compliance, and uphold professional standards.
- Proven ability to coach, mentor, and manage performance, including addressing conduct concerns through progressive discipline and clear, defensible documentation.
- Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgment under pressure, including coordinating operations, managing critical incidents, and maintaining officer and public safety.
- Experience reviewing investigative files and operational documentation, ensuring evidentiary integrity, disclosure readiness, and compliance with reporting standards. This includes demonstrated experience in fatal collision investigations.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting motorcycle motorcade escorts.
- Demonstrate experience in conducting interviews with the media and attending community meetings.
Asset
- Experience coordinating joint operations and collaborating with internal units and external agencies during complex or multi-agency incidents.
- Demonstrate expertise in use-of-force principles, de-escalation, tactical communication, and officer safety practices.
