JOB TITLE: Break Café Service Staff
Department: Food Services Break Café
Report To: Break Café Manager
1. JOB STATEMENT:
The Break Café Service Staff are responsible for performing all service-related duties and ensuring that service standards are consistently met or exceeded, under the supervision of the Break Café Manager. They help oversee service areas and may act as a representative of management in their absence.
As the primary point of contact for guests, Service Staff represent the overall quality of the Break Café experience. They are expected to provide quick, efficient, and courteous service while engaging with guests in a positive, inclusive, and professional manner.
2. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A. Operations
- Meet & greet our guests with a smile and a hospitable demeanor.
- ·Inform our guests of daily food & beverage specials and offerings
- Prepare, Serve, and Expedite hot & cold beverage program.
- Expedite food orders as needed.
- Address customer needs, complaints, concerns on behalf of the serving staff and Break Café management.
- Perform and supervise cleaning, closing, and side duties as delegated by the manager
- Performing closing duties and signing off on their completion.
- Be aware of cross-promotional opportunities within the organization.
- Accurately take orders, organize the order into the POS system, and serve the order in a timely manner to the guests
- Dispense beverages according to the prescribed specifications in the Barista manual
- Problem solve any issues our guests may have, with assistance from supervisor.
- Accurately bill our guests and process payments
- Perform cleaning, sanitation, closing and side duties as delegated by the manager or supervisor on duty.
- Assist Facilities with monitoring Second Student Centre lobby for cleaning and debris
- Work within the Break Café, Kitchen & Management teams and become an effective group contributor and supporter of our positive work environment and work effectively with your fellow colleagues
- Any other tasks as assigned from time to time by the Break Café Manager

3. RELATIONSHIPS:
The Break Café Service Staff reports directly to the Break Café e Manager within the YUSC Food Services Department. They work closely with the Break Café Manager, supervisors, kitchen staff, and fellow service team members to ensure smooth and coordinated day-to-day operations. Service Staff may also interact with YUSC operations staff, student patrons, and external vendors as needed to support service delivery, respond to inquiries, and uphold the overall guest experience.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
- Exposed to kitchen environments, including, sharp tools, and hot surfaces.
- Must be physically able to move quickly through work areas as required.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Role requires prolonged periods of standing or sitting.

- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the steps of service and apply them consistently.

- Anticipate guest needs and proactively address concerns.
- Assist fellow service staff and bartenders through respectful and honest communication.
- Practice cost-awareness by avoiding unnecessary waste of time and product.
- Strive for continuous improvement in service quality and maintain a professional image as a representative of the Break Room.
- Refer to the Break Café Team Manual for a detailed list of all employee operating policies
- Appear and present yourself in a in a very hospitable and friendly manner with clean uniform.
- Ensure only the highest quality food, beverage & service reaches our guests in accordance to all pre-established standards & specifications.
- Your service, procedures and timing must adhere to specified goals and reflect a commitment to maximizing the effectiveness of the operation. Anticipation of guests needs, wants and preferences will avoid delays and address concerns before they are communicated.
- Assist other team members in the café and kitchen to perform more effectively. You should always be honest but respectful in your comments to your team members.
- Be aware of the relationship between costs and prices and know that needless wasting of product & time increases the cost to our guests.
- Continually strive to improve the quality of service, the cleanliness of the Café and Break Café spaces, and present yourself as a professional employee of the Break Café at all times.
- Engage and Report all customer feedback via the MOD
- Make Sure Retail/Food/Beverage Displays are fully stocked at all times, cleaned and labels all facing towards the customer. Spec Sheet Provided.
- Maintain temperature logs in fridges, waste sheets updated and making sure all areas are fully stocked for the next shift.
6. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with people.
- Excellent organization and communication skills (oral and written).
- Good judgment, tact and diplomacy, and initiative.
- Effectiveness in attending to details.
- Ability to work as an effective member of a team in a high-volume environment.
- Cash handling experience
Pay: $17.60 per hour
