Working for the Department/Faculty
Facilities and Operations is a diverse envelope of services that is responsible for managing the buildings across our five campuses. Facilities & Operations manages capital construction and renovations, providing utilities and energy management to delivering student and campus services. Facilities & Operations works behind the scenes to make the university one of the top places in the world to study, live and work in.
This position is a part of the Trades Infrastructure and Maintenance (TIM), which is located within the Assets Management and Operations unit. TIM is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of maintenance services that support the building infrastructure system operations through the use of trades workers, general maintenance workers and leaders.
Position
The Building Envelope Science Technologist will have a vast knowledge on components of building envelope systems including but not limited to roofing, curtain wall systems, insulation, material interaction and compatibility, waterproofing, transfer of heat and moisture through building envelope, and windows.
The Building Envelope Science Technologist will have to investigate all sorts of architectural components at the University of Alberta to determine building envelope life span remaining or potential causes of failure. As the building envelope science technologist, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing reports on findings, review upcoming projects that are in planning for the future of the university.
Duties

Duties for this position include development and management of building envelope component inventories.

Providing technical expertise and guidance as the lead in hiring engineering consultants and building envelope contractors on renewal projects and maintenance projects.

Recommend repair and restoration options for preventative, corrective, reactive, and emergency maintenance on building envelope components.

Act as the university representative in owner related activities such as the development of project requirements, and assessing methods of construction repair and renewal.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in building science, engineering, or architecture; or equivalent training is required.

May hold E.I.T., AScT, or C.E.T. designation.

Be able to read technical building envelope drawings.

Project management experience is required.

Construction experience is also required.
