Brief Overview:
Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Officer I provides day-to-day communications support to assigned departments/ministries and projects, helping translate program information into clear, accurate, and accessible messaging for citizens, employees, stakeholders, and the public.
The Communications Officer I supports communications planning and campaign delivery, content development, messaging and brand application, workflow tracking and quality control. Working collaboratively with internal teams, this role helps ensure communications activities are well coordinated, delivered on time, and aligned with MN–S priorities, standards, and tone.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Service

Support the Communications Officer II and Communications Manager in implementing portfolio communications plans and activities.

Coordinate communications requests, timelines, and deliverables.
-
Ensure projects move through established workflows and approval processes.
-
Support communication activities related to programs, services, announcements, and events.
-
Ensure communications activities are completed on schedule following established processes.
Communications Campaign & Channel Implementation

Implement communication activates across digital, social, web, print and email channels.
-
Support the scheduling and publishing of content across MN-S channels.
-
Support sequencing and rollout of communications activities across channels and audiences.
-
Contribute to routine communication department activities and projects such as annual reports.
Content Development and Storytelling

Attend meetings and events to gather content for dissemination across MN-S Communication channels.

Create social media content, website content, newsletters, and email communications.
-
Develop digital content including social media graphics, photography, short form video, and other multimedia assets.

Ensure all content aligns with MN–S brand, voice, and communication standards.
Internal, Media & Interest Holder Communications Support

Support media relations activities, including preparing backgrounders, media releases, key messages, and briefing materials.

Support internal communications activities and employee communications.
-
Assist with media and interest holder communication activities.
-
Assist in responding to social media and website inquiries and route requests appropriately.
Measurement, Workflow & Quality Control
-
Track communications activities, timelines, and deliverables using established workflow and project management tools.

Monitor content performance and audience engagement metrics and support reporting efforts.

Support the continuous improvement of communications processes and documentation.
-
Ensure quality and accuracy of all written materials prior to publication.

Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

A degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

2+ years of relevant communications experience.

Demonstrated experience drafting communications and supporting communications initiatives and campaigns.
Knowledge and Skills:
-
Understanding of Métis culture, citizens, communities, and inclusive communications practices.

Knowledge of core communication principles, including message development, audience awareness, and channel selection.

Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate and audience-appropriate materials.

Ability to develop and adapt content across formats, including briefing materials, web content, social media content, and internal communications.

Ability to support communications plans and campaigns through research, coordination, and implementation.

Knowledge of brand standards and quality control practices.
-
Ability to build effective working relationships with internal interest holders.
-
Basic knowledge of communications metrics and reporting.

Proficiency in Microsoft 365, including OneDrive and Teams.
-
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite including InDesign and Photoshop.
Additional Requirements:

A valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation.

Must provide an acceptable Criminal Record Check prior to commencing employment.

Work in an open-office environment with long periods at a desk.
-
The Travel requirement for this position is 10% per annum.

Travel and work outside of normal business hours, as required.
