Disability Support Specialist

Purpose:
The Health, Safety & Employee Well-Being team (HSEWB) provides advice and support to the employer, staff and faculty to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety related legislation, Human Rights Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and in the administration of the University's Disability Support Program by understanding, assessing and case managing straight forward and complex WSIB, short term and long term disability claims as well as workplace accommodation issues (medical and family status) to facilitate early and safe return to work.Reporting to the Manager, Employee Well-Being, the Disability Support Specialist contributes to the advancement of an integrated model of health, safety & employee well-being. This position provides expert advice and guidance to academic administrators and non-academic managers, staff and faculty members, multiple unions and third-party stakeholders regarding complex disability support, accommodation and return to work cases. This includes liaison with both internal and external stakeholders to adjudicate and manage claims and facilitate safe and timely return to work and accommodation (medical and family status), for complex short-term absences, long term disability, and WSIB claims. As part of the Health, Safety & Employee Well-Being (HSEWB) team, this position participates in the development and implementation of occupational health and safety and workplace wellness programs and initiatives.

Education:
University graduate or equivalent in a related field such as Human Resources (supplemented with certification in disability management field), Rehabilitation Counselling, Kinesiology, Health Sciences or Social Sciences, Disability Management certification courses required.Industry Designations: designation in disability management, e.g. Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP), Registered Rehabilitation Professional (RRP), Canadian Certified Rehabilitation Counsellor (CCRC), Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRWC), Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Professional (CVRP), Registered Kinesiologist, Occupational Health Nurse

Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in a related field such as disability / WSIB claims management, health & safety, human resources, or occupational health, including experience with complex claims management in a unionized environment preferably in a large public sector institution. Knowledge of and experiencing applying Human Rights Act provisions with respect to accommodation. Experience with workplace health programs is preferred as well as a working knowledge of external insurance providers.

Skills:
Thorough knowledge of legislation and principles pertaining to disability management/ support, WSIB, return to work and accommodation. relevant federal and provincial legislation, including the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act, Human Rights Act and Accessibility legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Public Health, MLTSD etc.
  • Ability to explain and apply corporate policy and procedures and collective agreement provisions effectively
  • Effective case management skills requiring active involvement and advanced strategies for managing complex cases
  • Effective verbal and written communications and presentation skills
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to manage time in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including exercising tact, diplomacy and sensitivity when dealing with employees in a multi-union and non-unionized environment and staff / faculty at all levels, as well as external stakeholders
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent computer and information technology skills, including MS office applications and claims management software

  • Remote work arrangements are currently in place
  • Normal office environment with some need to attend on site to any workplace / buildings within the university campuses

  • At times, must respond to and diffuse adversarial or emotionally charged situations
  • Will require work outside of regular business hours
  • May be required to participate in a 24/7 on call rotation with other members of the Employee Well-Being team.
  • Compensation:
York implemented a revised CPM Compensation Framework in 2019. The Framework is a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award. Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.Visit the CPM Compensation page on the HR Website to find out more about York's CPM Compensation Program.
