Project: 2D Animated Proof-of-Concept — Animal Place
Project Type: Short-term freelance contract (Remote)
Production Scope: 3-page animated scene (~90 seconds, 2 characters)
Compensation: $25–$30/hour
About Animal Place:
Animal Place is an original animated television series entering proof-of-concept production to test its visual identity, technical workflow, and cinematic potential. We want the series to feel painterly, emotionally rich, atmospheric, dimensional, and cinematic—inspired by the environmental depth and lighting of productions like The Legend of Korra, without directly copying an existing style.
The Role:
We are seeking a remote Environment & Look Development Artist to establish and execute the visual atmosphere of this test sequence. This is a production-minded role: you will carry early visual development through to final, production-ready background paintings, delivering organized, layered assets optimized for assembly and animation in Toon Boom Harmony.
Key Responsibilities & Required Skills:
* Visual Development & Look Dev: Establish the sequence's environmental look using mood boards, colour studies, and lighting explorations. A strong portfolio showing exceptional digital painting with atmospheric perspective is required.
* Cinematic Layouts: Translate storyboard requirements into compositions that masterfully apply perspective, scale, and spatial design to drive emotion.
* Production Background Painting: Deliver final, premium-quality background paintings separated into logical, clean layers (foreground, midground, background, sky, and atmosphere elements) for multiplane parallax camera movement.
* Pipeline Integration: Highly proficient in Toon Boom Harmony (required) or expert-level digital painting software (Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or Procreate) with a proven ability to supply pristine, meticulously organized, and named layered files specifically formatted for immediate Harmony pipeline integration.
* Collaboration & Delivery: Work closely with the Creative Director and pipeline team, implement feedback constructively across revisions, and meet strict production deadlines.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
* Advanced experience creating complex assets specifically for Toon Boom Harmony multiplane setups.
* Experience utilizing Blender or alternative 3D software for layout, perspective, or composition guides.
* Prior experience on premium television animation, feature animation, or cinematic game projects.
Expected Deliverables
* Sequence mood boards and color/lighting studies.
* Final production background paintings with logically separated layers.
* Harmony-ready asset files with technical notes mapping out intended parallax and atmospheric treatment.
* A concise sequence look guide documenting finalized colour, lighting, and environmental styles.
