Millennium EMS Solutions Ltd. (MEMS) is looking for an Intermediate Vegetation and Wetlands Biologist to provide support to the Environmental Sustainability Services (ESS) team. A minimum of 5-7 years of directly related experience in field biology paired with a Degree in Environmental Sciences or a related program is required. The candidate must have a strong desire and willingness to work in the field, in potentially remote areas. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of wetland identification, classification, restoration, protection and reporting. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the Alberta Wetland Policy, environmental regulations, guidelines, requirements, and standards.
This is an intermediate level role that requires the incumbent to understand environmental consulting, data collection and analysis, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will provide field support to the ESS team by conducting vegetation assessments and research on wetlands areas, including observing plants and animals, and collecting data and samples from the field. The successful candidate will have experience and availability for field work in remote areas under a variety of conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Development of cost estimates based on project requirements and client needs.
- File compilation, organization of field data, interpretation of laboratory results, maps, survey plans, and air photos.
- Planning, managing, and implementing field programs, evaluating collected information, preparing professional reports, and ensuring quality assurance and quality control.
- Compile soil and vegetation surveys including ecotype and soil classification, rare plant, and weed surveys.
- Field programs can include, but are not limited to, vegetation monitoring and maintenance, Phase 1 ESA site visits, detailed site assessments, pre-reclamation assessments, and mediation.
- Utilization of orienteering skills (including compass and GPS) in remote locations.
- Understanding AGRASID methodologies and procedures for soil classification.
- Identification of forest, agronomic, and weed species, using field guides and vegetation keys.
- Compile file reviews and reporting of Environment Site Assessments, including but not limited to remediation reports, detailed site assessments reports and application compilation.
- Application of current regulatory criteria, specifically the 2010 Reclamation Criteria for Wellsites and Associated Facilities and Alberta Tier 1 and 2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines, BC Contaminated Sites Regulation, and BC OGC Certificate of Restoration program.
- Working with contractors and accurate field cost tracking of expenses and contractors.
- Mentor staff on execution of field work (including sub-contractors, data collection and field documentation, cost and expense tracking and daily field tickets, application of MEMS Safety Management System and Quality Management System on field work) and preparation of cost estimates and reports.
- Actively pursuing opportunities to promote the development of the service group.
- Other duties assigned.
What you bring:
- Experience in the execution and management of site assessments.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of directly related experience in field biology paired with a Degree in Environmental Sciences or a related program is required.
- Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization is required.
- Knowledge and experience with Tier 1 and Tier 2 guidelines.
- A strong understanding of the agricultural, forestry, and oilfield practices.
- Must be able to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, this may include pre-access drug, alcohol, fitness testing, etc.
- Possess a valid, non-GDL Class 5 drivers license.
Other Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong understanding of agriculture, forestry, and oilfield industry; including associated practices and sciences.
- Knowledge of reclamation certificate application process.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience driving, hauling a trailer, and operating an ATV.
- Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary setting.
- Good organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel.
