Job Title: Casual – On Call
Wage Rate: Grid 9 (regular wage: $31.04/hour)
This position is compensated in accordance with the Fernwood NH/BCGEU Collective Agreement wage grid. Wage rates are aligned with the CSS-GS JJEP. Probationary wage is 85% of the regular wage.
Hours & Schedule: Casual position – this position will be employed on an on-call basis. There is no guarantee of hours. Shifts will generally fall between Monday to Friday and between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. (with possibility of special events outside of these dates and times).

Job Summary
We are looking for an On-Call Cook to support the planning and delivery of meals and snacks for Fernwood Neighbourhood House programs. The Cook plans menus, prepares meals, manages food inventory and donations, and ensures food safety and kitchen operations are maintained effectively.
General Responsibilities
- Develops healthy, age-appropriate meal and snack menu plans in accordance with accepted nutritional guidelines, including Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating, and the individual dietary needs of clients, children, families, and community programs.
- Prepares, cooks, and serves meals and snacks, including those required for special diets, special occasions, and programs serving children and adults, using donated and purchased food and in accordance with established health and safety standards and approved menu plans.
- Oversees the operation of kitchen and dining facilities and equipment, ensuring their cleanliness, safe use, maintenance, and compliance with safe food-handling practices.
- Reviews organizational meal preparation requirements and purchases equipment to meet identified needs within approved budget limits.
- Purchases and orders food and related supplies required for meal preparation, ensuring expenditures remain within approved budget limits.
- Maintains inventories of food, supplies, and equipment; ensures proper storage and rotation of food items; receives and organizes food donations; and minimizes food waste.
- Monitors and maintains refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher temperature logs.
- Participates in special events as required.
- Meets established budget and food wastage targets.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Minimum one (1) years of experience in a high-volume cooking position, preferably in a community setting.
- Graduation from a program in institutional or residential quantity cooking.
- Food Safe certification.
- Experience preparing food for individuals with specific dietary needs, including young children.
- Strong communication, organizational, and coordination skills.
- Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Professional, responsive, positive, and collaborative approach to work.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence (access to a vehicle is an asset).
- Successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal record check.
Working Conditions / Equipment Used
- Ability to lift and move boxes of produce and frozen foods up to 50 lbs.
- Experience using commercial dishwashers, standard ovens and stovetops, and cold-storage equipment.
