Metallurgical Technician

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A university degree or college diploma in metallurgy, material science (ferrous/nonferrous materials) or equivalent experience.
  • Magnetic Particle Inspection Level 2.
  • Three to five years experience in Automotive Manufacturing environment or related experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in heat treat operations or a combination of a minimum of 5 years of formal metallurgical education and heat treat experience.
  • Experience working with metallurgical laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to interpret microstructures of ferrous and nonferrous materials.
  • Be able to work with machine shop metal working tools to extract samples for further preparation.
  • Ability to review lists of possible contaminants and checklists for safety guidelines including emergency contact numbers. Ability to read and understand drawings. Use tables to record test data and measurements such as flotation results, pH levels, chemical composition values and weights.
  • Ability to compare production data against quality control test values in order to isolate and assess production problems. Compare measurement data to statistical tables and graphs to determine if samples meet requirements.
  • Ability to delegate tasks and provide information and guidance to staff members under their supervision. Discuss test results and seek opinions about project developments with supervisors.
  • Ability to decide which methods to use to prepare samples for analysis. Evaluate the quality of raw material test samples and field data in order to recommend adjustments to collection procedures and processing operations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, other technologists and technicians and other staff on the same project. May conduct work and collect samples independently.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel). Familiar with TS 14969 and ISO14001.
  • Learn through courses offered by technical institutes, colleges, universities and through in-house workshops offered by company. Receive training on new computer programs and software updates. Acquire new learning by communicating with their co-workers, colleagues and peers and reading available books, manuals, reports and journals.
  • Ability to use a cutting saw to prepare samples for metallurgical evaluation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Metallurgical sample preparation and measurement of micro and macro hardness characteristics.
  • Evaluation of material microstructures before and after heat treatment.
  • Keeping records of measurements in order.
  • MPI –samples and perform contamination test.
  • Keeping equipment and laboratory in working order.
  • Some other duties in the laboratory and on the shop floor can be assigned.
