Steel Yard Labourer / Torch Cutter
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour (based on experience)
Job Description
Rypac Metal Recycling is currently seeking a motivated and reliable individual to join our Steel Yard team.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work in an outdoor industrial environment and wants to develop skills in torch cutting, steel processing, heavy equipment operation, and metal recycling.
As a Steel Yard Labourer / Torch Cutter, you will assist with processing ferrous materials, cutting oversized steel for shipment and production, supporting equipment operators, and helping maintain a safe and efficient yard. This is a physically demanding role with excellent opportunities for training, advancement, and long-term career growth.
Qualifications
- Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to work safely in a fast-paced industrial environment.
- Experience with oxy-propane or oxy-acetylene torches is an asset.
- Welding, fabrication, scrap metal, or heavy industrial experience is an asset.
- Forklift or heavy equipment experience is an asset.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
- Reliable transportation to and from work.
Responsibilities
- Torch cut oversized steel and scrap metal to meet processing and shipping requirements.
- Assist with plasma cutting, general welding, and steel preparation as required.
- Sort, process, grade, and prepare ferrous materials for shipment and recycling.
- Work alongside material handler, shear, crane, and other equipment operators to maintain production flow.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and staging materials throughout the yard.
- Assist customers in the steel yard by directing traffic, unloading material, and providing excellent customer service.
- Perform routine machine cleaning and assist with basic equipment maintenance, including greasing and general upkeep of processing equipment.
- Conduct basic inspections of tools and equipment and report maintenance or safety concerns to supervisors.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment, including general yard housekeeping duties.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, equipment operators, and fellow team members.
- Assist with inventory organization and material storage as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
