Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) – Responsibilities
The Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) will work under the supervision and direction of a registered Occupational Therapist to support the implementation of individualized treatment plans for pediatric clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement occupational therapy treatment activities according to the treatment plan developed by the supervising Occupational Therapist.
- Support children with goals related to fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing, coordination, motor planning, visual-motor integration, self-care skills, and activities of daily living.
- Facilitate therapeutic activities such as sensory play, obstacle courses, scooter board activities, swings, trampoline activities, puzzles, pre-writing and handwriting tasks, dressing skills, and other functional activities as directed by the OT.
- Support children with emotional regulation, engagement, transitions, attention, and participation during therapy sessions.
- Prepare therapy materials, equipment, and treatment areas before sessions and ensure the space is organized and cleaned after use.
- Monitor and document client participation, response to treatment, level of assistance required, progress, and areas of difficulty.
- Complete accurate and timely session notes and clinical documentation according to CRC policies and procedures.
- Report relevant observations, concerns, changes in performance, or safety issues to the supervising Occupational Therapist.
- Participate in regular supervision, case discussions, and team meetings.
- Collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary team, including Occupational Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Communication Disorders Assistants, Behaviour Therapists, Physiotherapists, and other professionals.
- Follow all safety procedures when using sensory and gross motor equipment.
- Follow CRC policies regarding confidentiality, infection control, incident reporting, allergies, workplace safety, and professional conduct.
- Communicate appropriately with parents and caregivers regarding activities completed during the session, within the direction and scope established by the supervising Occupational Therapist.
- Maintain a professional, respectful, child-centred, and family-centred approach at all times.
Scope of Practice
The OTA works under the supervision of a registered Occupational Therapist and does not independently conduct occupational therapy assessments, establish diagnoses, develop treatment plans, modify clinical goals, make discharge decisions, or provide recommendations outside the established treatment plan.
Pay: $25.00-$35.00 per hour
