Overview
The Hamlet of Kugluktuk is seeking a qualified Waterfront Beach Lifeguard to ensure the safety and wellbeing of community members and visitors at our unique northern beach.
This is a meaningful outdoor role in an exceptional setting, serving a close knit and welcoming community.
What You Will Do
At the Beach
- Serve as the sole lifeguard on duty at the community waterfront beach
- Oversee swimmer safety at a beach welcoming up to approximately 55 visitors at peak times
- Mentor and support recreational beach staff
- Collaborate with community agencies including Search and Rescue and Bylaw Services
- Oversee and facilitate waterfront safety programs
On Inclement Weather Days
- Support the Recreation Division with community programming including special events, summer camps, movie nights, sports events, and other activities
- Assist the Recreation Coordinator and team as needed
Qualifications
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Waterfront certification from the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada required
- Lifesaving Instructor certification under RLSS preferred, with ability to teach Bronze Medallion and Cross
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification
- Strong ability to engage positively with youth, including patience, approachability and ability to build trust
- Cultural awareness with genuine respect for Inuit culture, traditions and community values, and a commitment to humility and sensitivity in all interactions
Benefits and Compensation
- Hourly Rate: $31.37 to $33.77 per hour, plus Northern Allowance
- Northern Allowance: $23,000 per year, paid hourly alongside regular wages
- Hours: Minimum 37.5 hours per week with a flexible schedule and two days off per week
- Food Allowance: $260 per week, paid twice a month
- Housing: One private room in staff housing provided at no cost
- Travel: Round-trip airfare from the nearest Canadian airport to Kugluktuk, Nunavut, plus accommodation during travel
- Insurance: WSCC coverage while on duty
- Payroll: Standard deductions apply
