Do you want to make a difference? Join the world’s largest humanitarian network. The Canadian Red Cross Society (CRC), a not for profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping the most vulnerable in Canada and throughout the world, is currently seeking an Intern in International Humanitarian Law within the Global Relations and Humanitarian Diplomacy (GRHD) Team at the National Office in Ottawa.
The GRHD team is committed to engaging Canadians, especially youth, in humanitarian issues. In line with this, we offer limited unpaid credited internship positions for students currently enrolled in a Canadian university law program to gain experience in a professional office environment. Students participating in the internship program are involved in professional projects, assignments and activities with assigned staff. These internships are not aligned with paid employment at the CRC following the internship.
There is currently one internship position available for the winter term (January to April 2020).
The intern will assist team members in:
- Conducting research and preparing written briefs on humanitarian issues and trends.
- Supporting the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Network with event preparation and with the development of educational or communication materials.
- Providing extra note-taking and administrative capacity
- Fulfilling other tasks based on the needs of the team
Students must commit to a minimum of 21 hours of work per week. Where possible, attempts will be made to align the nature of the internship with the background, studies and interests of the successful candidate. Like all members of the GRHD Team, applicants must be prepared to take on their fair share of administrative tasks.
Successful candidates will have a strong record of academic achievement, a sense of professionalism, as well as a demonstrated commitment to humanitarianism. Applicants must be enrolled in a post-secondary academic law program in which the internship experience will be credited. Applicants must clearly state the specific course name and code offered in their law program for which they can receive credit for the internship.
Other specific qualifications include:
- Strong research and written communication skills in English (French is an asset).
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team but also independently on projects.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
Duties are principally conducted at the National Office of the Canadian Red Cross in Ottawa, with possible travel to attend conferences, workshops or meetings as required. Most of the work is performed in an office environment which is mostly clean and comfortable.
