The Manager, IP Mobilization at ORSIE plays a pivotal role in establishing and managing the Intellectual Property (IP) program at Durham College. The role is focused on maximizing the value of IP generated through our research initiatives. The position is responsible for establishing and executing the operations of the IP strategy consultation and investment services for small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the Medical Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Automotive sectors. This position requires a combination of strategic thinking, business/legal acumen, and business development skills to ensure the successful commercialization of innovations emerging from the College.
- Oversees the identification, protection, and management of IP assets, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets for internal and external projects
- Develops and implement strategies to safeguard College and external client IP portfolio to maximize value of IP
- Ensure projects do not infringe on existing IP, determine alternative directions if project deliverables appear to infringe on IP
- Develop, modify and update forms and processes to support IP management
- Conduct due diligence assessments on ‘high-potential’ clients to support funding for IP protection and commercialization initiatives
- Assess the commercial potential, market opportunity, and competitive landscape of investment prospects, including evaluating IP portfolios, market positioning, and revenue projections
- Evaluate the financial viability and risk profile of investment opportunities, including assessing revenue forecasts, cost structures, and potential return on investment
- Lead efforts to assess the commercial potential of research outcomes and technologies developed within ORSIE
- Collaborate with researchers, industry partners, and legal professionals to discuss licensing agreements, partnerships, and other commercialization opportunities
- Drive the commercialization from invention disclosure through to market launch, including market research, product development planning, and go to market strategies
- Cultivate relationships with potential clients, industry partners, investors and other stakeholders to expand the organizations network and enhance collaboration opportunities
- Develop and execute business development strategies to increase the College’s projects for the following hubs: the AI Hub, Centre for Cybersecurity Innovation, and Mixed Reality Capture Studio
- Cultivate relationships with clients, industry partners, and funding agencies to support technology transfer and commercialization efforts
- Coordinate and organize events, seminars, workshops and conferences related to IP, technology transfer and commercialization initiatives
- Manage event budgets, expenses and logistics
- Facilitate speaker recruitment and engagement, coordinating presentations, panels and keynotes addresses to provide valuable insights and expertise to event attendees.
- Develop and implement educational outreach programs to raise awareness and enhance understanding of IP, technology transfer and commercialization concepts among staff and students
- Recruit, hire, onboard and train talented professionals to build a high-performing team responsible for the IP management, consultative, and investment activities.
- Define roles, responsibilities and performance expectations for team members, setting clear objectives and KPIs to measure individual and collective success
- Provide ongoing coaching, feedback and professional development opportunities to support the growth and career advancement of team members
- A minimum of a PhD or Masters in Law, IP Law, innovation, commercialization, or business administration.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in management consulting, IP Strategy/IP Law, project management, as a venture capitalist, as a technology transfer officer and start-up

- High degree of conceptualization, analytical ability, initiative, independent action and presentation skills.
