PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER
St. Leonard's Place, Peel is a community based residential program that provides a place of safety, belonging, dignity, nourishment and education for homeless men with serious mental illness and those who have been in conflict with the law.
Reporting to the Operations, the Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides direct support to residents who require additional assistance due to physical health concerns, aging-related needs, mobility limitations, mental health challenges, cognitive concerns, substance use impacts, or difficulty managing daily routines independently.
The PSW supports residents’ quality of life, safety, dignity, and stability as part of their health, correctional, and reintegration plans. This role requires flexibility, patience, strong boundaries, and the ability to support residents with complex needs in a community residential setting.
Key Responsibilities
Activities of daily living (ADL)
- Bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and feeding support, where required
- Providing access to medications
- Hygiene routines and personal care prompting
- Mobility support and fall-prevention practices
- Maintaining clean, safe, and organized living spaces
- Observing and reporting changes in physical health, hygiene, appetite, sleep, mobility, or overall functioning
Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL)
- Providing access to prepared meals
- Grocery shopping support
- Laundry routines and clothing care
- Appointment reminders, preparation and accompaniment
- Daily structure and routine-building
- Encouraging residents to participate in programming, recreation, and community activities
Recreation Support
- Assist residents with higher support needs to participate safely in recreational activities.
- Attend approved community outings where additional PSW support is required.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized Personal Support Worker program
- Minimum one year of PSW experience
- Experience supporting individuals with complex needs, including mental health, addictions, mobility concerns, cognitive challenges, aging-related needs, or justice involvement
- Ability to support residents with ADLs and IADLs
- Understanding of trauma-informed, client-centred, and harm-reduction approaches
- Knowledge of basic de-escalation strategies and crisis response
- Ability to maintain strong professional boundaries
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic documentation systems
- Demonstrated respect for diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural differences
- Valid Driver’s Licence with clean driver’s abstract
- Current CPR/First Aid certificate
- Medical clearance to work in a residential setting
- Clear Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with CSC clients, justice-involved individuals, or residents in community residential facilities
- Experience supporting older adults, individuals with chronic health needs, or residents with high support needs
- Experience in mental health, addictions, shelter, residential, long-term care, or community-based settings

Shift Focus: Tuesday-Saturday 10-6pm (on site position)
Contract position until March 31, 2027
Hourly Rate: $ 22.31 - $23.87 Experience
Minimum 1-year experience in residential program
Support Care: 2 years’ experience in providing care as a PSW preferred
