Reporting to the Chief Actuary of Blue Cross Life, the Director of Group Underwriting is responsible for managing the outsourcing of group underwriting to the Company’s regions, providing support and guidance on quotes and renewals, managing the reinsurer relationships, developing and supporting underwriting tools, resources and training, and providing risk and financial analysis.
Establish an oversight framework and maintain oversight responsibility for the delivery of group underwriting in all shareholder Blue Cross Plan regions
Oversee regional authorization limits and ensure appropriate levels are set based on experience, knowledge and overall regional volumes
Coordinate underwriting audits and review results with BCL and regional management
Provide value-added advice on all aspects of group underwriting for new and renewal business, primarily on large complex groups
Update current and develop new competitive group underwriting best practices and policies
Develop and maintain effective reinsurer relationships as well as interface with the reinsurers on quotes for non-standard groups and secure reinsurance when appropriate
Develop and provide formal training sessions to the regions
Conduct analysis of the impact of trends on the financial results and provide critical success factor reports to the BCL corporate office and the regional plans
Manage and lead the corporate office group underwriting department including operational activities, human resources processes, development and execution of the operation plan and budget for Group Underwriting and the establishment of goals and objectives for the team

Education: Bachelor Degree of Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Finance, Administration, or any related field of discipline
Work Experience: Ten years of experience in group insurance underwriting, with a minimum of three years in people management
Computer Skills: Strong working knowledge of Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Language Skills: Bilingualism in both official languages is considered an asset for this position
