About the Program:
The Employment Services for Newcomers on Special Visa (ENSV) program is designed to support immigrants on special visas, including Ukrainian nationals under the CUAET Visa and refugee claimants with open work permits who have not yet received a decision. The program helps participants overcome employment barriers by providing holistic, client-centered services focused on job readiness, skill development, wraparound support, and long-term career success.
The Role:
As a Career Practitioner, you will work with newcomers on special visas who are unemployed or underemployed and face challenges such as language barriers, limited digital literacy, lack of Canadian experience or networks, and unfamiliarity with Canadian workplace culture. You will guide clients toward employment or further training by helping them develop realistic career action plans and connecting them with the necessary resources and services.
You will collaborate closely with workshop facilitators, job developers, and mental health professionals to ensure each client receives the comprehensive support they need to thrive in the Canadian labor market.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct client intake, eligibility screening, and needs assessments for referrals (internal, external, or self-referred).
- Provide one-on-one career counselling using a collaborative action-planning approach to support clients’ employment goals.
- Encourage client participation in employment workshops focused on job search strategies and mental health support.
- Offer ongoing case management, including follow-ups, reassessments, referrals, and job search assistance.
- Partner with job developers to connect clients with job placement and training opportunities.
- Work collaboratively with Mental Health Counsellors to support clients with mental health concerns in their employment journey.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date records using internal Excel tracking tools and the Government of Alberta’s COMPASS database.
- Provide resume support, interview preparation, and job readiness coaching.
- Facilitate or support job search workshops using participatory and inclusive approaches.
- Conduct labor market research and contribute to program design and continuous improvement.
- Assist with organizing events and supporting clients in the job search hub as needed.
Qualifications:
Education:
- A university degree in a relevant field is required.
- A Career Development Certificate or CCDP designation is an asset.
Experience:
- Experience working with immigrants and/or individuals facing mental health challenges is essential.
- Experience in employment coaching, employer engagement, and navigating the labor market is an asset.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Drive, Zoom, MS Teams, and other digital tools.
- Experience or willingness to train in client data systems such as Excel, COMPASS, or Mobius.
Communication:
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to adapt communication style to meet the diverse needs of clients.
- Fluency in Amharic and Tigrinya is required.
