The Role
We are a large forestry contractor working across the mid Vancouver Island with many pieces of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles. We are looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic in a union environment working out of our new Chemainus shop and with a dedicated service truck. This is a full time, 40 hours a week position, plus overtime as needed at USW 1-1937 pay rate of $54.56 per hour.
The job involves performing assembly, disassembly, and repair to hydraulic components, diesel engines, trucks, forestry equipment, and additional transportation and mobile equipment.
Responsibilities
- Perform repairs and maintenance on equipment in accordance with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications.
- Diagnosing equipment by locating sources of problems by observing mechanical devices in operation, listening for problems, and using precision measuring and testing instruments.
- Ensure proper operation of equipment through checks and tests. Replace or repair defective parts in equipment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production breakdowns.
- Clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance on equipment.
- Execute routine scheduled Planned Maintenance (PM) services, appraisals, and Safety Inspections.
- Use of computerized maintenance software (our shop uses MaintainX).
Requirements
- Comfortable working on-site and in the bush with a dedicated service truck.
- Red Seal certification in Heavy Duty Mechanic.
- 3+ years of experience in a heavy-duty mechanic space, performing repairs on trucks, forestry equipment, hydraulic systems, engines, and mobile equipment. Welding and electrical knowledge is a strong asset.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with the technician team and fill out worksheets.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, allowing for efficient identification and resolution of equipment issues.
- Ability to work as part of a team and be proactive and work on one's own initiative.
- Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
- Time management and priority management skills.
