Unit Summary

The Child and Youth Mental Health Outpatient Service is an integral part of the Child and Youth Mental Health Program at McMaster Children's Hospital. This team provides psychiatric consultation, individual and family mental health assessment and treatment, and group treatment to those experiencing complex mental health difficulties (many with comorbidities) and is affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University and the Offord Centre for Child Studies. With more than 10,000 annual visits each year this multidisciplinary team works with partners including pediatricians, family physicians, education, child welfare and other community agencies in the provision of comprehensive and evidence based mental health services to children and youth residing in Hamilto

Position Summary

The Social Worker conducts mental health psycho-social assessments of children, youth and their families. The Social Worker delivers a range of evidence based services/interventions to individuals, families and groups including case management, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), emotion focused family therapy (EFFT), family therapy, and psychoeducational intervention. The Social Worker role engages with community resources including community and other hospital based mental health programs, schools and adult services to facilitate transitions, communication and advocacy to provide the best care for clients and families. The Social Worker will identify and make referrals to appropriate supports and resources as required.In addition to providing a clinical service the Social Worker participates in the development of the multidisciplinary team, contributes to new and ongoing research and quality assurance projects, and provides consultation/liaison to other caregivers and community agencies. The Social Worker may also provide education to the public and other professionals on issues relevant to the field of child and youth mental health.

Monday to Friday; days (requires some evening work)

Qualifications

1. Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from an accredited School of Social Work
2. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Social Workers and Social Service
Workers
3. Specific training and relevant three (3) years experience in facilitating therapeutic and psychoeducational groups for children, youth and parents
4. Minimum of 3 years recent and relevant experience in a pediatric mental health setting with expertise in providing individual, group and family therapy for children, adolescents and families
5. Excellent knowledge and demonstrated use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Based Therapy (DBT, Emotion Focused Emotion Therapy (EFFT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) with a pediatric mental health population.
6. Expertise in a range of therapeutic modalities and interventions including evidence-based therapeutic practice in assessment and treatment of children, youth and their families as demonstrated by three years of recent relevant experience in a mental health setting serving an outpatient pediatric population
7. Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Consent to Treatment Act, and the Child and Family Services Act
8. Expert knowledge of community-based resources
9. Demonstrated expertise and strong knowledge base in the occurrence and range of child and youth mental health disorders and difficulties
10. Demonstrated expertise and strong knowledge base to support triage activities of new referrals.
11. Demonstrated proficiency in report writing relating to assessment, consultation and treatment services
12. Excellent written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills
13. Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills
14. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a multi-disciplinary team
15. Willingness to participate in a criminal reference screening process
16. Fluency in French is an asset
17. Must be able to obtain a valid Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS)
