We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Head of Housekeeping to lead our Housekeeping Department.
This is a working supervisory position for someone who takes ownership of their department, leads by example, and understands the demands of hotel operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Housekeeping Department, including staff supervision, scheduling, training, room inspections, inventory, laundry and maintaining hotel cleanliness standards.
This is not a Monday-to-Friday administrative position. The Head of Housekeeping is an operational leader whose schedule is based on hotel occupancy, staffing levels and business requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise the Housekeeping Department and its team of room attendants and housekeeping associates.
- Prepare and manage departmental schedules according to hotel occupancy and operational requirements.
- Take responsibility for addressing and covering staffing gaps when required.
- Assign daily workloads and organize the department to ensure rooms are completed efficiently and on time.
- Train, coach and develop housekeeping associates and ensure established procedures and standards are consistently followed.
- Personally inspect and sign off on completed guestrooms, ensuring rooms meet hotel and brand cleanliness standards before being released.
- Address deficiencies immediately and provide coaching and follow-up when standards are not met.
- Clean guestrooms and assist with housekeeping duties as operational needs require.
- Assist with and perform laundry duties as required.
- Maintain accurate inventory of linens, guest supplies, cleaning products and departmental supplies.
- Monitor linen and supply levels and communicate ordering requirements to the General Manager.
- Maintain housekeeping storage, laundry and work areas in a clean, organized and safe condition.
- Identify and report maintenance concerns, room damage and deficiencies promptly.
- Work closely with Front Desk and Maintenance to coordinate room status, priorities, maintenance issues and guest needs.
- Respond to housekeeping-related guest concerns professionally and assist with resolving service issues.
- Monitor employee performance, provide ongoing coaching and document performance or attendance concerns when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety procedures, WHMIS requirements and hotel policies.
- Maintain cleanliness standards throughout guestrooms and assigned public areas.
- Lead by example and actively participate in the workload of the department.
Qualifications
- Previous hotel housekeeping experience strongly preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience leading a team of 10 or more employees required.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to organize, coach, motivate and hold employees accountable.
- Excellent attention to detail and a strong understanding of cleanliness and presentation standards.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to prioritize and adjust quickly when occupancy, staffing or operational requirements change.
- Comfortable working independently and making day-to-day operational decisions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, professional and able to maintain a calm, respectful leadership approach in a fast-paced environment.
- Able and willing to perform the physical duties associated with hotel housekeeping, including cleaning guestrooms and completing laundry duties.
- Food Handler Certification is considered an asset.
- Previous experience with hotel pool operations, pool testing or pool maintenance is considered an asset.
Schedule & Availability
This position requires flexible availability based on the operational needs of the hotel.
The Head of Housekeeping schedule will vary according to occupancy, staffing and business levels and will include weekdays, weekends and holidays. Start and finish times may vary.
Applicants should understand that hospitality is a seven-day-a-week operation and this position requires flexibility and dependability.
Reporting
The Head of Housekeeping reports directly to the General Manager and is accountable for the overall day-to-day performance, organization, cleanliness standards and leadership of the Housekeeping Department.
