Homalco First Nation’s Orford Camp is centrally located in Orford Bay, serving as the hub for the Homalco Taggares Hatchery, wildlife and cultural tourism, and fisheries enhancement. The camp includes bunkhouses, a cookhouse, and essential infrastructure to support both seasonal tourism and ongoing hatchery activities. Homalco is dedicated to upholding high standards of safety, stewardship, and cultural respect, supporting sustainable community development and salmon enhancement initiatives.
JOB SUMMARY
The Camp Bull Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and delivering nutritious, high-quality meals for approximately 10–20 staff and guests at Homalco’s remote camp locations. This role plays a critical part in supporting camp operations by maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen while ensuring food safety standards are met. The Camp Bull Cook contributes to a positive camp environment by accommodating diverse dietary needs and respecting cultural practices.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and prepare daily meals, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for approximately 10–20 camp staff and guests.
- Develop weekly menus that are balanced, nutritious, and cost-effective.
- Order, receive, and manage food and kitchen supplies, including inventory control appropriate for small-to-medium group sizes.
- Ensure all food handling, storage, and preparation meet health and safety regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen, dining, and food storage areas.
- Accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences, including cultural considerations.
- Coordinate meal schedules with camp operations and tourism activities.
- Support camp setup and closing procedures as needed.
- Foster a respectful, team-oriented camp environment.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong cooking and meal planning skills in a camp setting.
- Knowledge of food safety standards and safe food handling practices.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote environment.
- Strong organizational and inventory management skills.
- Adaptability and problem-solving in dynamic camp conditions.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Respect for Indigenous culture, traditions, and community values.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience as a cook, preferably in camp, catering, or institutional settings.
- Cook (Professional Cook 3) (Red Seal) is considered an asset.
- Food Safe Level 1 (Level 2 considered an asset).
- Experience working in remote or outdoor camp environments is an asset.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Orford Camp is a strictly DRY CAMP. Random drug and alcohol testing is implemented. Violations result in immediate dismissal.
- This is a rotational position: one week in camp, one week out. Camp is remote; travel to/from Campbell River is provided.
- Candidates must be comfortable with extended stays in shared accommodation and able to work in varying conditions.
