Position Overview
LOCAL Industrial Partners is seeking a dependable and experienced Metal Recycling Lead Hand / Yard Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day operation of our metal-recycling facility.
This is a hands-on supervisory position combining yard leadership, employee coordination, physical labour, scale operation, equipment operation, dispatch, administration, inventory control, and customer service.
The successful candidate will be responsible for organizing daily priorities, directing employees, maintaining safe and efficient operations, and ensuring customers and drivers receive timely and professional service. This position requires a self-starter who takes ownership of the yard and can make sound operational decisions with limited supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Yard Operations and Supervision
- Coordinate and oversee daily yard activities based on operational priorities.
- Assign work and provide day-to-day direction, training, and support to yard employees and drivers.
- Monitor employee performance, productivity, attendance, and compliance with company procedures.
- Lead by example by actively participating in equipment operation, material processing, cleanup, and other yard duties.
- Organize workflow to ensure materials are received, sorted, processed, stored, and shipped efficiently.
- Monitor yard conditions, storage areas, traffic routes, unloading areas, and emergency access.
- Identify operational issues and communicate staffing, equipment, inventory, safety, and scheduling concerns to management.
- Support the onboarding and training of new employees.
- Maintain a clean, organized, professional, and productive facility.
Scale and Customer Service
- Operate the truck scale and prepare accurate scale tickets and transaction records.
- Receive customers, inspect incoming loads, and assign the correct material grades.
- Identify, sort, and grade ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
- Explain material classifications, receiving requirements, and yard procedures to customers.
- Complete customer transactions, payments, daily reports, and related administrative duties.
- Respond professionally to customer inquiries by telephone, email, and in person.
- Address routine customer concerns and refer significant issues to management when required.
Dispatch and Logistics
- Dispatch drivers and coordinate bin deliveries, exchanges, pickups, and material shipments.
- Communicate schedules, site information, customer requirements, and route priorities to drivers.
- Adjust schedules throughout the day in response to changing customer and operational requirements.
- Coordinate outbound shipments with management, customers, trucking providers, and receiving facilities.
- Confirm that loads, tickets, weights, and shipping documentation are accurate.
- Monitor bin availability, material inventory, and yard capacity.
Material Processing and Equipment Operation
- Operate excavators, material handlers, loaders, forklifts, skid steers, and other yard equipment as qualified.
- Load and unload customer vehicles, bins, trailers, and transport trucks.
- Sort, process, consolidate, and prepare materials according to established grades and shipping requirements.
- Complete pre-use equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance.
- Report equipment damage, mechanical concerns, and required repairs promptly.
- Perform physical labour, material sorting, cleanup, snow removal, and general yard-maintenance duties as required.
Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
- Promote and enforce LOCAL’s safety policies, safe-work procedures, and environmental requirements.
- Conduct toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, workplace inspections, and other required safety activities.
- Ensure employees, contractors, drivers, and customers follow established yard rules and traffic procedures.
- Complete and submit incident reports, inspection records, and other required documentation.
- Identify and correct unsafe conditions or work practices within the limits of the position’s authority.
- Report serious safety, environmental, equipment, inventory, or operational concerns to management immediately.
- Ensure required personal protective equipment is worn and properly maintained.
- Support ongoing compliance with LOCAL’s COR-certified safety-management system and applicable regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in metal recycling, waste management, industrial operations, construction, transportation, or a related field.
- Previous lead-hand, supervisory, or crew-lead experience is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metal identification and grading is strongly preferred.
- Experience operating loaders, excavators, material handlers, forklifts, skid steers, or similar equipment.
- Dispatching, truck-scale, inventory-control, customer-service, or administrative experience is considered an asset.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to assign work, provide clear direction, and hold employees accountable professionally.
- Ability to coordinate multiple priorities and adjust schedules throughout the day.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and communicate effectively with management.
- Mechanically inclined, with basic equipment-maintenance knowledge.
- Willing and able to perform physical labour in addition to supervisory, administrative, and equipment-operation duties.
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
- First Aid, WHMIS, forklift, or equipment-operation certifications are considered assets.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a practical, hands-on leader who takes ownership of the yard and recognizes what needs to be done without waiting for continuous direction.
They can effectively organize employees, equipment, materials, customers, and drivers while maintaining a safe and productive workplace. They are equally comfortable directing a crew, operating equipment, dispatching drivers, assisting customers at the scale, completing paperwork, sorting materials, and maintaining the yard.
They communicate clearly, remain composed when priorities change, and understand that good leadership includes both providing direction and working alongside the team.
Physical and Working Requirements
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors throughout the year in changing weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work on uneven surfaces.
- Ability to safely enter and exit trucks and heavy equipment.
- Ability to work safely around commercial vehicles, customers, processed materials, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.
