Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Manager of Occupational Wellness and Disability Management, the Disability Management Case Officer
(DMCO) will provide disability management services to employees and line management when employees are absent for medical
reasons and/or require medical accommodations. The DMCO is responsible for managing disability claims in a proactive manner,
including determining entitlement for disability benefits, implementing interventions to support recovery, and facilitating return to work
as early as it is safe to do so. This is a term opportunity with a duration of approximately 12-18 months.
Responsibilities:
- Support and guide employees who are absent from work for a medical reason and/or require a medical accommodation in
relation to MH's sick and disability benefits and related employer duties.
- Build effective working relationships with line management and HR in support of disability management practices.
- Gather, synthesize, review, and assess information relating to the use of sick and disability benefits.
- Guide and assist line management in providing employees with reasonable medical accommodations as per the Manitoba
Human Rights Code and the Workers Compensation Act and Regulations.
- Collaborate with members of the Occupational Health team and external service providers, as required, to arrange
assessments for employees.
- Coordinate the return-to-work process, including obtaining necessary information about an employee's readiness to return to
work, the capacity in which the employee may return to work, and any restrictions in effect. This also includes communicating
with the employee and the employee's leader regarding the return-to-work plan.
- As a shared responsibility with the remainder of the Disability Management team and the Occupational Health team, maintain
detailed, accurate, and appropriate records relating to the remain-at-work and return-to-work processes.
Qualifications:
- Minimum four-year degree from an institute of recognized standing, plus three years of directly related experience, two of
which are in a disability management capacity;
OR
- A two-year diploma (health major) from an institute of recognized standing, plus five years of directly related experience, three
of which are in a disability management capacity.
- Possessing a Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) designation is considered an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to influence and maintain effective working relationships with
management and staff throughout the enterprise, as well as with external organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with confidential information adhering to PHIA requirements.
- Adaptable and flexible in responding to changes in the environment and business requirements.
- Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in disability management programs and return to work practices.
- Strong written communication skills with experience writing reports and recommendations.
